Took in this little Robo of uncertain age and unknown gender today.

Turns out it's a boy, he feels thin and light, his nails were so long they started to curl so i clipped them first of all.

Was going to call a boy Attila or Hannibal because this one ate his brother. Previous owners noticed one was missing when they cleaned the cage.

Neither name suits him. I think i may call him Tony.

Ate his brother??!!! Yes, he looks the type! Gorgeous ham, though.

From your photo, I think Hannibal quite suits him. With a face like that, he needs a characterful name!

Nearly fell off my seat laughing at this comment!!

Yes, the people i bought him from got two Robos in April off someone and were told they were under a year old. They didn't know their gender and said they were too small and fast to check. A month ago one died which they only realized when they cleaned the cage and there was only a bit of fur and skin left of the other.

What i don't know is the following: did one die of natural causes and because the owners didn't dispose of the body the other hamster did in a way that's natural to prey animals
OR did they fall out and fight resulting in the death of one and the other disposed of the body.
I'm inclined to go with the latter because in my estimation they couldn't be more than 14/15 months old.

I was thinking not to mention the cannibalism in a future adoption ad but then again, anybody who'd be put off by that doesn't know enough about hamsters to understand their nature.
On the other hand, the name Hannibal and a brief mention of the relevance may be a good opportunity to point out to the public why it is not a good idea to keep hamsters in pairs.

Hannibal turned out to be a Hilda which has the nordic meaning of the fighter.

Considered Twiggy at first because she's so skinny but hamsters don't usually stay skinny in this house.

After comparing Monty's anatomy with the newcomer's something appeared to be missing.

These two chunky boys shared a tiny cage without a wheel or toys. They are tame and easy to handle, lovely boys.

What a busy hamster weekend.

The light coloured dwarf and Josie moved to a friend who is a bit of a hamster whisperer.

The brown dwarf was adopted today and so was Hilda.

I met Hilda's adoptive mum at Porton Aquatics, got sidetracked into the rodent rehoming section and got the sad background story of a little dwarf.

He was housed with another hamster who attacked him resulting in a serious injury that required surgery. He has a long scar under his right arm.
As if that wasn't bad enough, he was then made homeless and ended up in a tiny display tank, available to anybody willing to pay a fiver.

He's still in a small tank but at least its my tank.

He's called Bruce.
