I currently have a young wild bird living in a hamster transport box with Rodipet scoops acting as a water and food dish! Whatever next.
I found it on its back on the patio, unable to move and stunned. There's a nest under the roof and it either fell out or was kicked out, no idea what happened.
I had to move it so the neighbourhood cats wouldn't kill it so put it in a basket in a tree, watched and checked for a few hours but the parents didn't feed it. Quite a commotion with lots of tweeting and that was it. I think they abandoned it so i took it in.
I think its injured but unexpectantly survived the night so have to wait and see if it recovers or not.

The little bird is still alive but can't fly because its right wing doesn't work at all and i can see that its injured. I just took it outside and its tweeting with the birds under the roof tweeting back. At least it can move now but is a scruffy little thing.
It can't survive in the garden and would be a cat snack in no time, so i guess that i'll have to make it a cage.
It hasn't been in the house because i don't know if wild birds carry fleas or diseases that could be passed on to hamsters.

Does anyone know if that's the case?
I'm out of my depth here.

very cute Ria, can your local vets help. I know one of ours round here will help poorly wildlife.
Or is there a bird sanctury near you, that helps with wildlife.

there is a link on this page that you can look up local rescues also might be some advice on what to do.

Thank you so much Luna! Through this link i found a wildlife animal sanctuary who was happy to take in the little sparrow. Not far from where i live in a beautiful woodland setting.

The adoption centres of local petshops are overrun with Robos. There were five of them in one shop and i watched one poor soul trying to burrow in half an inch of woodchips with only a dirty flying saucer in the small tank. He has spent his whole life in there and was estimated to be 8 mths to a year old. Up for adoption since February and then the lockdown happened.
Guess what, i took him home and set him up in a bin cage. Not the biggest cage i've ever made but it has two wheels, a 6in Carefresh burrowing area, a sand bath and toys.
Plan is to have him adopted to a suitable forever home with all his new belongings plus a matching transport box.
I advertised him but people who wanted to adopt weren't suitable so i took him off that site and tried a more specific site.
Not sure what's happening, maybe i'm starting a Ria's Robo Retreat or maybe i'm just unable to walk past a hamster in need when i have an empty cage at home.
See what pans out but Freddie must be happier here than in the petshop adoption. He loves his wheels, runs like mad for ages then has a one minute rest where he lies on the wheel flat as a pancake with the face almost in the substrate then starts all over again.

Aww ria what a heartbreaking story! To have spent so long of his short life in the pet shop without the right housing and stimulus fills me with horror. Freddie is lucky that you spotted him and took him in whether that is forever or until he finds new adoptive parents. He must just love not being in the pet shop adoption centre. It sounds like he is loving his new life. He is gorgeous and wish him (and you) every happiness. Hams are so special x

Oh Ria what you like, good for you. Shall we start calling your home Ria's Rescues

I bet he doesn't know what has hit him being at yours.

If you lived nearer I would have taken him off your hands.

I reckon you are going to fall in love and him keep him

So lovely to watch Freddie popping out from a tunnel tonight and straight onto his wheel. Just doing normal hamster stuff. I do want to give him up for adoption but it won't be easy to find someone who is good enough. The hamster world needs more people like you Luna and Charlie.

Talking about rescues. Here's a treat. A little while ago i fostered a male white dwarf who had been kept with females. The three females, two of them white, were in the rescue on pregnancy watch. Here is the result. Two weeks old and came out of the nest for the first time today and there are probably more.
