I am sure it must be upsetting and I think I would find it hard letting them go.
No, probably not because i haven't heard back and i was polite, honest. I did suggest to return the cage if they can and purchase something like the Savic Plaza then went on to explain what to put in it.

Mostly i reckognize suitable people when they enquire. They volunteer the kind of information that's important to me because it's equally important to them. They are happy and possibly proud to show off their habitats and they ask me questions about the hamster's personality, likes and dislikes.

I don't have info sheets because i'm not a rescue that advertises as such but yes, it is a good idea, just not for me.

Have you thought of putting minimum cage size you would find acceptable on the adverts? Just a thought- it might save some time when getting enquiries. Not sure if you do that already?

I used to quote a minimum of 80cmx50cm but then changed it to a decent sized habitat to find out how people interpret this plus it depends on the individual hamster. I do state "please do not enquire if you have a Savic Spelos, tiered or any other type of small cage" to eliminate those right from the start. I also say that "proof of a suitable enclosure will be required".

If I was fostering and rescuing like you so graciously do, I would also require solid proof of good housing and care before considering letting a precious one go. I feel you're doing a great job and could probably make even higher demands imo. I'm sure you find suitable adopters every time though. If not, they're well off in your care. (:

I heard about the antics of female Syrians but this Maureen is crazy. She sleeps in her house during the day but becomes hyperactive in the evening. She gets an hour+ out of cage time which she loves but enthusiastically shreds cardboard and boredom breaker mats while in her cage waiting to get out. I've never had a shredder hamster before.

She even has her own towel for out of cage time which looks like giant moths have been at it. I don't think she's destructive for the sake of it just loves tearing things up.
Is there anything i can do to calm her down?

I'm quite worried that nobody is going to adopt her. She is lovely though and just climbed up my back.......

OMG she is beautiful.

I would just make sure she doesn't get adopted into anything less than 100 x 50, but maybe best into a tank style cage, possibly with no wood, or at least no wood that can be chewed.

Just keep doing what you are doing, giving her stuff to do. Not sure what else to suggest, except if you lived near me and I had space I would be coming to get her

Today our lodger, Gerald Roborovski has moved out to a lovely new home and his Mickey 2XL residence. And i have my desk back.

Then i looked at the small ads while i had my coffee and noticed an ad in my area of someone trying to sell four Robos! Apparently, they had been kept together but had to be separated so ended up in stacked, low plastic boxes with only drilled holes for ventilation taking up too much space! I haven't been in touch so can only go by the photos and description but i'm working in this very village today into tomorrow....

Oh dear, why are there always so many Robos looking for homes and why do back yard breeders still insist on breeding them to add even more Robos to the ever increasing homeless Robo population, i do not know. Petshops encourage people to buy them in pairs, they fight, one gets returned to the shop and resold.

Pass the Robo. It's just not fair. Runt over.

I've sourced and moved Maureen into an Alaska with lots of enrichment but she's still shredding!!

Maybe she's one of those hamsters that want to be free but when she's freeroaming she explores, shreds, explores, shreds.....

I'm trying to figure out what this is all about. It's almost like an addiction or is it stress behaviour?

Anybody got any clues? Can't do anything about it aside from sourcing more cardboard but i am curious now.
