Default Cage Upgrades

I have a robo hamster named Cove whose sand area has just been upgraded since I heard robo hamster cages need to be 1/3 sand and i've had a lot of time on my hands during the lockdown. Not exactly 1/3 of the cage, since she lives in a detolf, but close enough. She loved it anyway. What else can I do with her cage? Has anyone else done any upgrades with their hamster cage?

Could you post a photo of your detolf set up please so people can make suggestions? Lucky Robo!
Have you looked at the "Let's see your cages" thread in the Forum under Housing?

ooooh i smell some great care! AWESOME job with alot of sand. I really would love to see a picture of the cage to see what else you could add and even inspiration for my own and others! If you dont already, i would add some grapewood, you can buy it off amazon and it gives your hamster something to climb on, cork logs make amazing tunnels. Do you have a multi-chamber hideout? They are pretty pricey but are really worth it as hamster in the wild have multichamber burrows and in some countrys, you need to have one if you own a hamster as its such an amazing thing for your hammy. I would love to make more suggestions and it would be really nice if you could post a photo of your cage and of Cove, she sounds suuuper cute!

If I had a detolf I would section off half of it with 8 inches of bedding for burrowing. I would have another quarter with a couple of inches of sand, and the other quarter with shallow bedding (or you could even make this sand too). In the shallower area you can have the wheel and lots of hides and tunnels. You can also have millet sprays and other things like flax to enrich the cage environment, as well as wood chews, whimzees and pumice stones (the only things my Robo will chew are whimzees and pumice stones).

I gave her one of those whimzees dog chews and most of her cage has 9 inch high bedding. I made a custom cardboard hideout that she chewed a lot, so i flipped it backwards where there was a hole. She loves it so much. I also gave her a water bottle, but she doesn't seem to drink from it much. I replaced it today and gave her a water dish too, but she still doesnt drink anything. I did see something where you can put peanut butter on the nozzle then they will drink water while licking it off. I don't have any peanut butter and not only that but I know dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes and I don't know how much sugar that has. Do you have any suggestions for her to drink water?

Thanks! I live in the US, but I've gone to my local pet store and I didn't see any grapewood or cork logs in any of the sections, even the reptile one! I have seen some on amazon, so I might see if I can order some! I don't have any multichamber burrows, but I'm thinking about making one! Otherwise she has a ton of bedding and i gave her lots of tubes as well as hideouts. i have this giant birdhouse that she fits in, so I stuffed bedding in there and she loves it! Thanks for your suggestions! Cove is adorable, I wish I could switch bodies with her! I found her on craigslist, she was living with 2 of her sisters and there was only one wheel and it was a mesh wheel. Now she is a happy ham with chubby cheeks and so, so much sand. I love her so much, i may be able to add a picture of her.

Because they are so tiny, they don't drink much and the water bottle probably won't appear to go down from day to day. If you've had her more than a few days, she must be drinking as she would be quite dehydrated if she was not. Sometimes hamsters don't like to drink when people are watching, so she might be waiting until you are out of the room or asleep. If you see her using the bottle, make sure there are bubbles rising in the water as this indicates she is getting water out.

It would probably be a good idea to give her both a bottle and a bowl if possible so she has the choice. Since the detolf is so long, you could even put a bottle at both ends, just in case she hasn't quite got her head around all the space yet. She's most likely drinking just fine though. You could even give her a small portion of some moist foods like cucumber or grapes or apple if you want to be sure she is getting fluid.

I did give her both a bottle and a bowl, and I gave her some tiny slices of a cucumber slice and she was eating the cucumber a lot. Just wondering, are cucumber seeds good for hamsters? I cut them out just in case.

I think it's best to remove seeds unless they are definitely safe, and I'm not sure whether or not cucumber seeds are safe.
