Re: New hamster.
I buy sand too from smyths toy shop always clean and bone dry, found the chinchilla stuff by tiny friends too dusty and they don’t recommend you leave the chinchilla sand in the cage permanently whereas play sand you can

I mean, I do use that chinchilla sand.. from pets at home called tiny friends farm, I've heard mixed things about it... as supposedly they changed the formula.. so made it more dusty etc.. Left it in for awhile.. but it never has bothered him, tbh he barley uses it, he sometimes goes and digs in the sand for a moment then back out again.
I did think about play sand, but heard it's a process as you have clean it, and bake it in the oven..
I've heard people doing that even if dry or clean to be safe anyway, but not had an issue with the tiny farms brand... also the thing on his ankle.. is disappearing so think he's good.

Also I'd check the wheel really carefully to see if there is anywhere he could get a foot caught. Many wheels can have the odd safety issue. Nails in wood toys and houses can be another culprit - especially if they've chewed the wood and exposed a nail.

the spot on his foot, does appear to be going away, so that's good. his wheel is just plastic 12" wheel don't see any issues with it. I think he may of just hurt it when climbing the cage bars, he also used to chew one side of the cage quite alot, put in a tuff tunnel kinda underground. and not noticed him chewing or climbing the bars since.
I did try bath tub taming at the start.. maybe I just wasn't following through enough.. I did let him roam on my bed couple days ago. (I used the empty container for the sand) it's pretty good for transporting him.. I do have a carrier but sometimes it's hard to get him back in lol
when on my bed he was trying to go behind my pillows and one point almost falling off the bed.. sadly my room has lots of stuff can hide and never get him back, like wardrobe and desk lol so was abit worried about that.
at the same time, he does take food/treats from my fingers also.

I do have the tiny friends sand, heard mixed things, heard of others using it fine with no issues, other say it's dusty..
I've used it for awhile, not noticed it bothering him at all, he barely uses it to be fair, he goes in it once in a blue moon digs for a moment then leaves again, not really seeing him using it as a bath lol.

Re: New hamster.
Syrians tend to see sand as a toilet Tiny friends sand is fine. Check the tuff tube - they can have a sharp bit of wire where the spiral part ends or a sharp edge.

He had that spot on him even before I put it in . So that's not it. But its healing so that's something
Well he doesnt even use it as a toilet at all when the potty I put in his shoebox house he just sleeps in that in the shoebox lol..
Only seen him dig in the sand then leave again
. Yeah noticed the odd poo on the sand but never pee. Never really found wet patches either smell it sure . Never see it. He probably does it on the wheel or it just dries . I am using megazorb.

Re: New hamster.
You could try moving the potty . Our 8 month old Syrian used to do that - nest (and pee) in his litter tray. So I moved the litter tray to the other end of his house. He then had two nests - one in his potty and one at the end where the potty used to be. But as I kept emptying the potty he eventually settled in the main nest. He sometimes puts hoards in his potty but I take the good bits out and put them next to the potty so he’s stopped doing that now. It’s a kind of training really while working round their need for doing things in their own way.
It has taken a while but he now sleeps in his nest and pees in his potty

Re: New hamster.
Suggest taking any good nest out of his potty - chucking the sand out of the potty and cleaning it. Leave the old bit of nest where the potty was and refill the clean potty with sand and put it at the other end of the house. See what happens!

Re: New hamster.
I have a curious question, my hamster as of recently maybe a week or so ago, has started to come out way earlier (during the day) to run on his wheel, for example it's 4.52 pm, and he is out right now, even starts earlier than that, then late night he is sleeping then repeats in the morning, normally he'd wake up during the night to wheel now it's late afternoon...
does this mean anything?
