Do Roborovskis have a smell?
I noticed soon after getting my Roborovski that she has a certain smell about her. Not an unpleasant smell at all, just a sort of "musty" or "rodenty" odour. It fills her entire cage. It's not the bedding. I use the same bedding for my gerbils and they don't have the same smell. It also isn't a urine smell. She's been in three different cages since I got her and there has always been the same smell. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this with their Roborovskis?

Re: Do Roborovskis have a smell?
I only have males, and their overall smell isn't bad at all in my opinion (as someone who literally gags at the smell of food waste) but I've heard that female hamsters go into heat every 3-4 days and they get a bit of a smell when that happens? That's all I can say but honestly the worst smell from them is their wheels, as I have to clean them every couple of days as they both pee in their wheels lol.

Re: Do Roborovskis have a smell?
Females have a musty smell when in heat roughly every 4 days. It's not the hamster that smells, it's a discharge they produce and smears across everything. Good luck getting the smell off your hands!
That being said, I have only had one robo and he's a male.

Re: Do Roborovskis have a smell?
I'd heard about Syrians smelling when in heat, but not Roborovskis. The smell is particularly strong tonight, so I'll monitor and see if it is strong again in 4 days.

I think you're both right, it is heat. I've just picked her up, and she doesn't smell at all but she has a lot of discharge.

My Robo does go in heat too, bit of a musky smell every couple of days. Happy healthy ham

During this time, if you scratch her back she'll freeze and stick her tail up. I use this time to do a health check as they'll stay still the whole time if you continue to scratch her back
