How long before a new hamster can move in?
Sadly we’ve had to say goodbye to our little Bubbles today as he had a really bad eye infection that we’ve been trying to treat for the last four weeks with antibiotics.
So now he’s in hamster heaven and whilst we all feel incredibly sad we are happy that he’s no longer in pain.
My girls loved our little man and we’ve already said well get another one as soon as the cage is ready. I explained to them that I needed to clean the cage to get rid of any infection.
Which is what I’ve done today. It’s been thoroughly cleaned with pet safe cleaner.
How long do we need to leave it before a new hamster moves in?
Thank you in advance x

I am sorry for your loss of Bubbles.
As long as the cage has been cleaned, disinfected, rinsed and is completely dry, i'd say that its ready for a new hamster to move in.
Personally, i'd buy a new water bottle.

Re: How long before a new hamster can move in?
I'm really sorry for your loss. Eye infections can be extremely difficult to clear up and I'm glad Bubbles is not suffering anymore.
As far as time required until you let a new hamster move in, I'd say that if you have cleaned his cage and all the attachments such as wheel, bottle, toys etc very thoroughly with a pet- friendly disinfectant then it should be fine to let a new one move in now.
I'm only asking as I too have a hamster who has had a long-term eye infection and I am concerned that the time would come that we'd need to have her put to sleep, but how bad was Bubbles' infection? What were the physical signs and how did you know it was time to have him put to sleep?

Sorry to hear of Bubbles passing, as Vierville & Ria P have said once the cage has been cleaned then it should be fine for a new little furry to move in, play well at the bridge Bubbles

Re: How long before a new hamster can move in?
Thank you everyone for your replies. We will be getting our new baby the weekend after this then.
Bubbles eye started looking red and slightly puffy a while ago and at the time I thought I’d just keep an eye on it. But a week or so later it started getting worse so I took him to the vets who said he had a tear duct infection and that we’d need to start antibiotics.
So he had a week long course of antibiotics and at the time his eye didn’t look any worse but nor did it look any better. I thought the antibiotics might thanks a while to get into his system but Monday he looked so much worse. His eye was swollen completely shut and he looked like he had a swollen cheek.
Took him back to the vets yesterday and the vet said that it looked like the infection was deep rooted possibly right under his eye socket and would be really hard to treat so we decided the best and kindest thing for Bubbles would be to say goodbye xxx
