Question What substrate do people recommend? (UK)

Hi. I was wondering what substrate people recommend for hamsters? In the UK.

Not to expensive or dusty - good quality ones.

Thanks.

I use megazorb, I buy online but can get from farm shops.
Comes in a huge bag, use like an eighth for a full bedding change (maybe less)
Hammy loves to dig in it and burrow.
Also carefresh can be good, I buy it when it's in sale on amazon.

I've had no issues with dust for both of these.
I personly use mostly megazorb with a bit of coloured carefresh to brighten it up and different texture within. Had no odour issues, spot clean every 3 days and full clean every 10 weeks.

I now use softacard recently have switched from using Fitch.

Softacard comes in a 13-14kg bale which is tightly compacted and cost £17.50. It has hardly any dust. And myself and my hammies are really liking it. Made from shredded unused egg boxes plus is softer than I thought it would be - as soft as some of the bags of Fitch I have had recently.

I usually use Megazorb in my Chineseys cages which I tend to buy from a local equine shop and in the couple of years since I have been buying it, I've only ever had one bag that has been a little dusty. The substrate itself is soft and holds up to burrows nicely and can go quite a long time between clean outs.

I tend to keep some Kaytee Clean and Cozy for use in hospital and maternity cages as I found that it was softer than Carefresh and I was able to get it on Prime Delivery from Amazon whereas I wasn't able to get hold of Carefresh the last time I needed it at a local pet shop and it wasn't available on Prime. I might look into trying the Softacard for my maternity cages this year as I have heard positive things about it and it's available in the larger quantities that I would need.
