Default What colour is Hamilton?

Hi guys; apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place but I'm new here, so please be gentle

Just wondering if anyone could confirm for me what colour Hamilton is? I think he's just a black-eyed cream but I'm not sure, as when he was a baby he was totally cream and now he's about five months old and has been slowly developing black ticking. Sorry the photos aren't
great but hes a very wriggly hamster; I had to put him in that little basket just to be able to take a photo of him in the first place

Your hamster and my hamster could be twins! I've been wondering the same thing about mine. My best guess, based off of this website: http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/woodvie...iancolors.html

is that he's either a light grey (although it says the undercoat is darker, not lighter), or a sable dominant spot (although it says the blaze on the face is usually lighter, not darker). Neither is quite right based on the descriptions, so maybe someone who knows more about this will weigh in.

Do you have any photos of yours? Mine is definitely cream and not grey; it's just the tips of his fur that are black. But like you say none of the descriptions of coat colours seem to match him, so I'm confused :P

He is not a standard colour so you won't find him in the standards list. He's not a light grey (those are thought to be extinct) or a cream with that ticking. My guess is maybe a ghost yellow which is a cream that has the yellow gene so the ticking comes through as you see. You can sometimes see ghosting of the cheek flashes as well. He could be a Sepia silver grey which is a silver grey with cinnamon and sometimes cream carried.

I love that name; ghost yellow And after having a look at some pics of ghost yellow hamsters I think you're right Souffle; it seems to be the best match so far. Is it a common colouration or more rare to see than cream or yellow? His siblings in the pet shop looked nothing like him :/

It's becoming more common on the show bench as yellow is getting in to the cream lines. It's a bad idea to get yellow in cream lines as it is a devil to get rid of. Cream is epistatic so it 'covers up' the yellow which is still there under the surface so to speak. Babies usually look cream when young but as they mature the ghosting shows up and the yellowish tinge to the coat. Sometimes you only see the yellow when you breed a litter and torts and ghost yellows pop up! We have had litters like this but I think we have now managed to breed it out our lines.

Aw, so he's basically a mongrel I don't care, I love him all the same, even if he is a little troublemaker :P
