Naughty boy
So tonight Fudge has managed to remove the metal shaft for drink bottle. Once removed he stashed it in his best. I've managed to retrieve it but now I am wondering whether a bowl or another bottle would be best? The bottle is only 2 months old.

Re: Naughty boy
Get another bottle bowls are not good for Hammies. Or get two small bottles?

Re: Naughty boy
Definitely get another bottle! If he ate it, it could have been fatal.

Re: Naughty boy
I use the Classic Crystal Deluxe water bottles and I’ve never had a hammie that was able break it apart. If you’re worried though, a water bowl is fine for hamsters (we have a few members that prefer using water bowls!). You’ll need a shallow bowl, preferably ceramic so it can’t be tipped over while drinking, and a flat solid surface or platform to put it on so that it doesn’t get filled with substrate or knocked over while burrowing.
Edit: looking at your setup (from other threads), you’re already using the Crystal water bottle so it could’ve been defective or you have a very strong hammie! I’d try him with a bowl for a while though, because if he destroys another bottle, the metal balls in the bottle shaft would cause blockages if swallowed.

Re: Naughty boy
If he managed it once he might do it again so I would go for a bowl, all mine have bowls & seem to prefer them over bottles.

Re: Naughty boy
It's actually the opposite bowls are better for hammies than bottles. Unnatural position while drinking from a bottle, they can hit their teeth on the metal spout, bottles are never as hygienic as bowls etc. I tend to leave both in the cage overnight since she prefers bottles for some reason (will probably just remove the bottle for good really). But given the choice, bowls are definitely the better option.

Re: Naughty boy
All my hamsters have water bowls. Never had any problems with bedding getting into them cos I out them on top of platforms or houses.
Tarak (syrians) cage with bowl and bottle!
He doesnt use the bottle any more so I must take it away.
Popcorn (hybrid dwarf hamster) in his alaska cage with a platform
Mallow (roborovski) being king of the castle

Re: Naughty boy
Perfect. We have an extra bowl so we will start using that. He has knocked the bottle out a good few times as he tries to pull off the spout. He is a determined little thing and finally managed to pull it from the bottle. He was rather delighted with himself and took it straight to his hoard. He is a little monkey.
