Default I Can Not Believe This. Please Read.

I found the most terrible disgusting horrible thing ever at a pet store today. If you're a squeamish person you might want to NOT read this. And just so y'all know bear is my hamster I got from this pet store.

Ok so I went to the pet store to go get some hamster food for Bear this evening. I decided to take my dog just so she could get out and meet people. Once we got to the pet store we headed straight for the hamster aisle (me and my dad) and so I was looking at hamster food, not really paying attention to what my dog was doing.

This is where things get bad, if your a squeamish person you might want to NOT read this. I've seen a lot things and yet this hit me HARD. Anyways my dog was sniffing beneath the shelf pulling her head away and then putting it back under to sniff again. I was curious what was under there so I got down on my knees and looked underneath the shelf.

And you know what I found? A DEAD ROBO!!!! It was a baby robo too. At least I think so because he was a lot smaller then a robo should have been. And he was STUCK to the sticky mat they put underneath the shelves for when bugs get in the store they'll stick there and eventually die. But this robo would have had to escape, get stuck to the mat, not be able to escape, and then eventually die from dehydration and starvation. As people walked by every single day never taking notice of the poor poor hamster, left to die.

We alerted an employee and he just picked up the sticky mat and threw the stick mat and hamster in the trash. Now I didn't expect proper burial or anything. But he had NO sign of emotion on his face not nor did he apologize for this. I expect this was an every day occurrence after what happened next...

Both me and my dad were pretty disgusted but we still looked around the store a little more. So half joking to try and lighten the mood my dad's like 'hey I wonder if there's another dead hamster on this mat' I looked underneath and what do you know? There is! Another dead robo the victim of a sticky mat.

After this we payed and got out of the store as quickly as possible. I just can't believe this at all. That the poor hamsters suffered of starvation and dehydration and we didn't find just one, but we found TWO dead hamsters. What do you guys think? Cause I know this just ruined my weekend. I don't really ever want to go to that pet store ever again. And shocked that dieing on a stick mat could've been Bears fate.

This really sucks. Some pet stores really seem to not be very noligible. Those poor poor robos, I feel awful! Maybe you could report it like Auna said. This must have been really hard for you to experience this, sending big hugs of comfort your way!

I’m sorry to hear about your upsetting experience.

I have removed the company names from your post as we do not allow naming and shaming on the forum as we feel that complaints are better handled by the customer services department of the store or product in question.

Many retailers will use sticky traps such as the one you encountered if they have a problem with pests such as wild rats or mice and it is unfortunate that escaped animals that were intended for the pet market have been caught in them too. These traps should be checked regularly and dealt with accordingly if anything has been caught to minimise distress for both the animal concerned as well as anyone who may discover them.

I would address your concerns about their methods of pest control with the customer service department of the company concerned.

I would write a formal letter of complaint to the Pet Shop and send a copy to the RSPCA. Formal as in - don't do an emotional rant in the letter - keep it very businesslike - your Dad can help write it. In the letter, explain that you found two dead baby hamsters stuck to sticky mats used for pest control in X store and request that they cease to use this method of pest control which has led to suffering for a baby hamster. That you accept that sometimes hamsters escape but this would have been a slow and lingering death and inhumane. Request that they improve the security of their hamster cages, pointing out that baby roborovski hamsers are very small and escape through bar spacing and should be kept in tanks at all times. Ask for an assurance that they will deal with this matter and write back to you.

Type your name/s at the bottom and sign above them and put cc RSPCA place name at the bottom.

I think you will get a very quick response.
