getting over fears
so my Syrians not aggressive at all or nippy, but somehow iv'e grown a slight fear of it. iv'e been able to safely pick him up but i just cant seem to put him on my hand. it's probably a combination of me not used to 'handling' hammies or scared of their bites. do you guys have any suggestions on how to get over this. and how was the first time you handled one. thanks

Re: getting over fears
Picking up you hamster in a container (like a slow swoop) and put you hamster on your lap! Wait till you feel comfortable holding it and then scoop into your hand. You can do what you want. This is what I did when I first got my first hamster. Hope it helps!

Re: getting over fears
I think you just have to remind yourself that if anyone is going to be nervous it's your ham! If you feel nervous your ham will pick up on it, if he hasn't shown any signs of being nippy then it's highly unlikely he will bite so just try to relax & concentrate on trying to make him feel safe & comfortable rather than on your fear.
If you have a playpen or other safe, escape proof, area where you can interact with him then use that (you can get him to climb into a tube, mug, box or something to transport him) give him some toys to explore & just gradually introduce your hand, if you lay your hand flat he will probably just run over them to start with, don't make any sudden jerky movements, keep your hand still at first & you should be fine.

Re: getting over fears
One of my dwarfs chewed everything encluding me but it's getting much better now, he only smells. I used a gardenglove and that really works. It made me much more relaxed. I saw Hoppinghammy do that.

Re: getting over fears
Using gloves is usually a last resort with hams that bite, I wouldn't use gloves with a ham that isn't biting, for one they are much more likely to bite a glove than a hand & they can't get used to your hands or your scent that way.

That's why I only weared 1 and like Hopping Hammy did in her videos I give treats with my other hand.
It helped me a lot. I have to say he bit me before, not to be mean. He was also not afraight. He bite many times in the glove to at the beginning but it was over soon.
I can understand your point not to do it. But there is no off button for fear that's why I think it can be a good solution sometimes.

Re: getting over fears
My hamster is fairly new in our household and we've all held him in our bare hands and he's not properly bitten anyone out of frustration or anything like that. He just gets a bit nibbly when he smells food on my hand so just wash your hands and you'll be fine.

Re: getting over fears
I was really scared of my Syrian when I first got him too, he's never bitten anyone, even now if I stroke him and he jumps it makes me jump too and I pull my hand back so quick thinking he'll bite me. I know it's silly because he never has and I've had him for 2 years, I'm just a very anxious and jumpy person. When I first got him it really helped to have my boyfriend do all the handling at first, to prove to me that he wasn't going to bite anyone. Do you have anyone to do this for you? If you watch someone else handling your hamster then you can see that it won't bite you

Re: getting over fears
my father holds him with no worry so i try to replicate, my hamster is only a couple months old and is still cooperating like a tamed one would! ive picked him up and carried him many times, it's just putting him on my hand to roam freely scares me as i cant really see how close his mouth is to my hand, thus get freaked out,
thanks for all of your suggestions, i'l be sure to use and try them!
