New Hammy - Willow!
Hello there,
It’s been a while since I posted. My beloved little man Ricky died just before Christmas. I’ve been thinking about what to do for a while, and today I adopted Willow.
She’d been in the adoption cages for a while but they said she was still only a few months old. She looks quite big to me though! I have her home now & she’s suddenly got a cage about 3 times bigger than the one she was stuck in.
She seems to have gone a bit wild this evening though! I haven’t handled her yet, as I thought it best to leave her for 24hours at least. She hasn’t slept at all and is now alternating between running in the wheel, running on the saucer and climbing up to the top of the cage bars!!
Do you think she’s okay? Or is she just finding her feet with her new found freedom?
Any advice on adopting hams would be greatly appreciated!
Thank to you all & hope you’re all doing well. X

Re: New Hammy - Willow!
Congrats on getting Willow & giving her a loving home
She sounds fine to me, they all react differently to a new home, some hide & sleep some spend hours exploring everything so I wouldn't worry.
I wouldn't treat an adoption ham any different to another new ham just give her some time to settle then start taming/bonding when she seems ready, sometimes it can take a little longer to gain an adoption hams trust but often it's really no different.

Thank you!
Sleeping soundly this morning so I’ll just leave her be.

Re: New Hammy - Willow!
Congrats on giving Willow her loving, forever home with you. I hope that the two of you have many years of happiness with each other. I totally agree with all that Cypher said. Bless Willow, she probably got all tuckered out after a nice, long exploration of her wonderful new home. She sounds absolutely lovely.

Re: New Hammy - Willow!
Congrats on giving Willow a home I would agree with what cypher has said. I've adopted 5 rescue hams and they have all been very different, much the same as with my non-rescues

Re: New Hammy - Willow!
Thank you!
Things are very different now though. Since her crazy time when I first brought her home on Monday, she now seems to be in hiding. She’s in the bedding and seems comfy but last night she was awake in the evening - I could see her ears behind the bedding! - but wouldn’t come out at all. I know she’s eating as the food has gone down, and she’s drinking because I’ve seen her. I can also hear her chomping away but whenever I go near the cage she runs away!
Should I just leave her be for a few days do you think? She’s taken a bit of carrot from me earlier but then ran off to hide again. I guess it’s a bit of a shock to her after being stuck in a tiny cage in the adoption centre.
I don’t want to force her until she’s ready.
She’s really lovely though. I’ve been trying to change my picture so that it’s her instead of Ricky. I’ll see what I can do. I
Thank you all again!

Re: New Hammy - Willow!
Any help with how I can upload a photo?
It won’t let me change my avatar - it says the file is too big.
