Re: 31 Days of May 2018
Yippee!!!! Happy Star Wars Day and may the 4th be with you also, Kylo and SymonandSyril! Eros and I had a great time celebrating the special occasion as well and even post her latest adventure on her thread earlier today, lol. Kylo, the pics of you adventuring inside the miniature shoe is very adorable and silly; I'm sure that all your skill and expertise in mastering the secrets of the movable shoe would have been greatly appreciated by your all powerful grandfather Vader, lol.

Re: 31 Days of May 2018
Day 5
Over the past few days I have been desperately trying to do DIY hamster toys, hideouts, etc. and so far have been failing miserably. I tried to make a house I saw on youtube out of toilet paper and water and this was the outcome-
So first I tried this, no "surprisingly" that did not work it turned into this
It was just a sloppy mess so attempt 2
A little less toilet paper a little less water, alas it was just like the last
Maybe it is the mould, not the paper, no it is just my DIY skills
I don't think I will be making any more toilet paper DIYs soon

Re: 31 Days of May 2018
Aww, I'm so sorry that your DIY project didn't turn out as you had expected. I'm not sure what youtuber you got your idea from, but have you considered viewing VanillaHamHam's youtube on making paper mache items for hammies using PVA glue, different items around your house, and toilet paper? I believe that she has a really informative one called Stripey Halloween Snake Tunnel; but you can modify what idea you are creating and use her video only as a guideline to create something else if you are interested. For example, you can create a house similar to the one you were attempting to do previously, except you can use a large, handle-less mason jar, wrap it with saran wrap, and then build your paper mache with the method she described. When it is completely dried, you can remove the saran wrap and the mason jar and should just be left with Kylo's new hideout. I also know some people have used cardboard boxes or partial tubes as their base structure, combined them to make paper mache castles, etc. for their hammies homes. I think making a paper mache with strips of toilet tissue dipped into a mixture of PVA glue diluted in warm water is a stronger structure, and the sky is the limit on how creative you get. Lol, you can even possibly create a Star Wars themed spacecraft (or even an imitation Darth Vader head) if you desire to have something like that as a hideout for Kylo - just a thought.
I hope that you don't mind me making this suggestion. I just know how frustrating and sad it can be when I try to do something very special for a loved one and it doesn't work out. Sadly, it happens often enough so I always am so eager to get any ideas and helpful hints on what worked well for others.

Re: 31 Days of May 2018
Thank you so much dream tree to take your time to give me a suggestion! My only issue with PVA glue is that Kylo is a HUGE chewer and my concern is even if it is non-toxic glue, larger amounts of it being digested could take a toll on Kylo's health so I would rather stick to boring old tissue boxes and paper tubes than risking it. I may try dipping toilet paper in water, though, before I was wetting the mould under a tap then adding toilet tissue and I think that made the paper peel before it was fully dried

Re: 31 Days of May 2018
OK, I wouldn't risk it since he is a HUGE chewer. It is definitely best to be extra cautious. I have made things for Eros in the past. However, some of her absolute favorite hideouts are boxes and she treasures them tremendously as if they were her miniature palace, lol. If you do decide to try the same DIY project again using only water and toilet paper, I agree that dipping the paper in the water just enough to make it damp prior to attaching it to the mold probably will work better. You could also apply the layers in stages and let it dry overnight prior to applying the next few layers. That may also help. I did that when I made ornate homemade paper masks in high school art class, and the key was letting each stage dry thoroughly prior to continuing. If you try again, I will be wishing you the very best on your project and would absolutely love to see Kylo's finished hideout. I always love DIY projects, lol.
