Unhappy Why hamsters pass away when it's cold?

Hey guys, I was wondering how come so many hamsters pass away in autumn and winter? It is because of the coldness or some sickness can be triggered by the cold? What particular cause can it be? And what specific protections can I provide to our hamsters?

It’s similar to humans really, the performance of their immune systems become lowered when exposed to extreme temperature drops and they are more susceptible to illness like colds, and also wet tail if the cold causes them stress. This happens especially with older hamsters as they are more likely to get sick and they are weaker. You can put a radiator in the room with them on the other end of the room (not too close to the cage), give them deeper substrate and scatter more bedding around their cage or even place it where they sleep. This will all help to keep them warm. Also, if you don’t have cats or dogs, you can leave the room door open to help circulate the heat in your home. It’s a good idea to have a thermometer in the room on the wall. The suitable temperature for any hamsters is 20-25 degrees Celsius, but they can cope with a few degrees higher or lower. Hope this helped x

Thank you HamsterLoco for the explanation and suggestions! I will be as attentive as possible to the weather forecast later on.

Syrians especially are hard wired to live in a warm climate (Syria!) If they get too cold they can go into torpor (what some people call hibernation) and rarely come out of it, or if they do they can die shortly afterwards.

I go with keeping the room at the right temperature. When the heating is on it's fine but you can get freezing temperatures overnight, so have a little oil filled radiator on a timer that comes on for a couple of hours in the night.

This is interesting as I find that I have the most hamsters die when the weather starts to warm after winter, rather than in the depths of winter. My hamster room is heated to a stable temperature day and night, with lighting in winter. Even so they seem to know when the change of seasons are.

The first year I had a lot of hamsters I was alarmed to find so many died in March-May, and even had one of them sent for post-mortem to a specialist vet to try and find a cause. When I spoke to others with many hamsters they too had noted a similar pattern, and I've experienced it each year since. Mostly it's old hamsters or ones with a pre-existing illness.
