Hamster & Sand Bath
I was eager to give my hamster a sand bath to play in, but couldn't find an appropriate product for hamsters. Finally, I found one, poured it into a dish for her, she walked through it and then rolled BESIDE the dish. She has gone back a few times and appears to enjoy walking through it, but she is not getting any sand on her little body when she rolls BESIDE the dish.

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
How large is your dish? Sometimes, if the dish is too small, the hamsters aren't too motivated to roll in it. She may eventually decide to bathe there, just give her some time

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
My hamster took a while before actually rolling in the sand. She would sit in it. Then she started digging in it, before finally rolling in it. She also pees in it. It took about one week before she rolled. Each step took a day or two before she did the next.
Your hamster should get the idea soon. A big enough bowl etc helps. Your hamster may prefer a more enclosed sand bath.

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
Cotton has flicked the sand all over the place. I hope he got some enjoyment out of that. Daisy has been a lot more restrained. Hers is mostly still in the bowl. Daisy's sand is in a tapas dish, how cosmopolitan.

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
Ghost was in his sand bath from the day we got him, Pip used to love hers too, though the sand bath is quite a large one approx. 6" square and at least 4" deep, Ghost will go straight to the bottom of it and burrow properly in it, he seems to love it..

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
Some of mine have loved a sand bath. Some have used it as a loo only & others ignored completely (to be fair, with mine it varies a bit across the species too) but thes no hard and fast rule about hams always loving a sand bath. There does seem to be a rule that they will confound our expectations at every turn though

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
Gopal and Arun have rabbit corner litter trays as sand baths which they love. Robin and Kashi both have about half a bag of chinchilla sand directly on their cage floors. Little Fairy (the only roborovski) has a hamster litter tray for hers.
Rolling beside the sand bath!!!!

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
All of my RWWs and Campbells have enjoyed the bath. I have never found a single poo it there. Very mindful, I guess. I use chinchilla sand. Ezra enjoying his bath...

My dwarf loves his sand bath. My Syrian prefers to dig in here and poop in it.

Re: Hamster & Sand Bath
Thank you, everyone. I enjoyed reading your responses.
The size of the dish was approximately 4 hamsters x 2 hamsters.
Today I bought a corner litter pan to try. Zoe is asleep now so I will see how she responds to it when she awakens. I like the enclosed sand baths, but they all have holes on top. Zoe likes to jump on everything so there would be a risk of injury to her paws/legs if one went into a hole.
It looks cute to see a tray of sand with hamster footprints in it.
