Default Out of the cage activities.

I was wondering what kind of thing you guys do with your babies when they're out of their cage and how long do you keep them out?

My hamsters usually have about 15 minutes of out of cage time where I'll put them in the playbins which are furnished with climbing toys, a wheel, tubes, a sand bath and a water bottle. I'll often hide treats in amongst the toys too so that they can have fun finding them.

Alternatively, I may spend time encouraging them through an agility type course if I want to really interact whilst they're exploring and this is often the time that I'll do any taming if it's needed.

As they're Chinese, it wouldn't be practical to allow them to free roam in a room although Jessie tried once (she climbed out of a box that I thought she couldn't).

I usually get Newt out for an hour or so each evening. Maybe 15 minutes on the sofa and the rest running around in his playpen. When he's in the playpen I'll spend about 15 minutes with him and leave him to do his own thing for the rest. But my playpen is quite secure. If it isn't 100% secure you need to be there with them.

If you're taming a new hammy, getting in a playpen with them can be good! Although I think yours is going on top of the bed isn't it? So maybe not good for getting in with him Or you could let him run around in the dry bathtub with some toys in, and sit in that with him for a bit while you're taming (check your hammy doesn't run up your arm and jump out).

With my Russians I've found they really enjoy the play pen & can spend a lot of time in there, you can generally tell when they've had enough & are ready to come out so I don't have a specific amount of time, it depends on the individual ham. I've had a couple spend most of the day in there!
If you have the space you can make the play pen really interesting for them with lots of toys, cardboard, a wheel & just about anything else you can think of to keep them amused!
Some are a bit more cuddly & just prefer hand time or running around on me.

I hold my hamster to practice handling and also let her use her playpen. Time spent out of her cage varies sometime she doesn't want to come out at all, other times she is eager and is out for 2 hours.

She is quite new to me so still building up confidence.

Harry spends about an hour each evening in his playpen, which is basically his previous cage without the roof. A typical evening will be 15 minutes of Harry climbing out and me putting him back again, followed by 5 minutes finding all the hidden sunflower seeds, then 40 minutes working out in the gym, on his seesaw and his wheel. Which is all due to start again in approximately 2 hours time!
