Default Keeping a hamster in the living room

Our Syrian, Kalli, is currently kept in our spare bedroom, which is fairly quiet. We chose this as we were told to keep her in a quiet room by the pet shop. From reading things on here, it seems like lots of people keep their hamsters in the living room. We couldn't at the moment but we are moving house in a month or two so maybe then we could.

Is it a good idea to keep them in the living room, so they are more used to sounds/you being around? Is it not true that electronics like the TV can make annoying sounds to them? It would be nice to be able to see her without always going in the other room, as she is always aware we have come in and waits for food/doesn't just do her own thing while we are in.

Thanks!

If you would like to keep them in the living room, there's no issue with that. As long as you don't have lights on too late and your television isn't unreasonably loud, they should be just fine. It is true that all electronics (including even lights!) emit high frequency beeps and buzzes that we cannot hear, but your hamster should already be used to these sounds at this point. Bring her on in if that's what you want

As Drago said, the living room is fine, provided that you don't play blaring music or anything in there! I'd love yo have my Mushu in the sitting room, but unfortunately that is not possible as we have cats.

My hamsters have their own room now but I used to keep mine in the living/dining room when I had just the two of them and they weren't bothered by any of the noise. I'd imagine that it's something that they get used to after a while.

As the others have said it's fine, I have four hams in my living room! As she's been used to a quieter room it may take her a little while to adjust to the change but they soon get used to things.

I preferred having ours in the living room. Newt is currently in a spare bedroom and it's a bit too quiet. I think they like knowing you're around As long as the cage isn't near the TV or in any draughts it's fine.

Pip is in our living room, she watches every one with great interest and I'm sure she watches the TV sometimes, I do think Pip would not like being on her own in a room with nothing going on.

Pickles is a bit of a grump and she likes her quiet life she comes down stairs and sits on sofa with me and plays a long our landing but taps her door when she wants to go in and sometimes she even does a little growl if we go into her room in the morning for something. She is a princess who needs her sleep!!

I typically keep ours hamsters in the busy rooms of the house, this way we can enjoy their company. Most hammies haven't seemed to be bothered by the noise, but Ptolemy has never liked it so he's in a quieter room. I say give the living room a try.
