Default New hamster LCMV

Hello

Our little hamster Tilly passed away last Thursday, she was about 1 year and maybe 8/9 months old and has a good life with us,

She was my first hamster and I really loved Looking after her, she made me happy and relaxed me, she was happy and loved

I am currently 4 months pregnant with our first baby and after the death of Tilly we both decided to concentrate on the baby for now, but now me and my partner are thinking of getting another hamster, we are undecided still but are mostly thinking to get one,

My concerns are LCMV which I have only heard about today,
Has any one had any experience like this? Heard of it,
How can I know if we buy a hamster if they have it? I really loved Tilly and atvthe moment I am happy reading about hamsters again and looking at pictures of them, I think we will definatly get another hamster if not before baby then after baby,

What's your advice?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about Tilly, but she had a nice, long life.

From what I have quickly looked up, catching the illness from an infected hamster is rare, and the hamster will have symptoms of illness such as loss of appetite and inactivity.

My advice if you want another hamster? Go and get one. The risks do seem low, but I would be a little more careful about where you get the hamster from, to reduce the risk of illness. You'd be better off going to a reputable breeder, which is easier in the UK (I don't know where you are based). Show clubs such as the SHC, MHC OR NHC will have a list of hamsteries which all have to follow a strict care guideline. Otherwise, you could look at rescuing a hamster from somewhere like the RSPCA, as these will be health checked. I think you would be most likely to get a sick hamster from a pet shop, which is why I am suggesting a rescue or breeder over a pet store in your case.

Hope this helps .

Hello thanks for your help😃
I have been looking on and off at rescue websites in the area but no hamsters as yet,
I have been looking at a local breeder for a while aswell and she has good feedback, I messaged her and hopefully will be picking up a 10/11 week old syrain female this week
I have cleaned all of Tilly's cage tubes and toys etc and got a little travel bus ready for her to come back with us
I would love a white hamster but there is none near me (Brighton)

Little Tilly is buried in my local park in an enclosed garden area and I've been visiting her grave regularly,

Can't wait now to get another hamster, all my work collegeues have told me not to get one as they think I won't have time when baby is here, but I will always make time for the little hamster, TIlly gave me a purpose to be a mum and made me happy so I know the new one will aswell😃

That's excellent news I think the disease is mainly spread by the house mouse (eg wild mice), but I'm no expert. A hammy from a breeder will be fine! Enjoy your new baby/babies!
