Whoopsie!
Well, I try really hard not to acquire more pet hamsters. Truly, I do. But a friend of mine posted this fellow's advertisement in the Ontario Hamster Club, and well, I just couldn't say no.
Hopefully that works. His name was Merv, and he was being rehomed for free to a good home... and I knew better, and knew he'd be snapped up for reptile food and be lunch. Sadly, people are like that over here with free rodents.
We don't get many Chineseys in Ontario - when they pop up in pet shops, they're $50.
So, I did a bad, and emailed the owner. I had seen his set up (habitrail on a cardboard box, eep) so I knew he didn't have the best life ever.
Well, they agreed for me to grab him, and my friend picked him up last evening. His set up was more abysmal than I had pictured. The habitrail broke immediately, his wheel was tiny, and the bedding he was on was literally industrial pine chips... not even proper bedding.
He's now in on paper based bedding, has a saucer and sand bath (which he loves) and we're going to upgrade him slowly to a bigger sized cage (he's in another habitrail until I grab him).
I've changed his name to Sprocket. He's apparently very sweet, though perhaps a little bit annoyed at being upended - can't blame him!
Going to monitor him for a URI and test his urine with keto-diastix once he gets here. I think I'll be getting him on Friday. He's ~one year, and weighs 40g.

What's one more mouth to feed, really? Haha.

Oh but look at his cute little face though. <3
I'm glad that you were able to take him and give him a good home.

Aw bless! How could you say no to that little face, so glad little Sprocket's luck has changed & he's going to have a lovely life now.

Thanks guys! I really do try to limit "pet only" hammies, but well, I just can't say no to Chineseys! Both mine are rescues. I hope he does enjoy his life from now on, poor wee dude! I've already begun collecting things for him now. Hopefully he wins over "hamdad", aka my partner, who wasn't super happy with the whole thing, but I'm sure he'll love him haha.

Re: Whoopsie!
Awww Sprocket is a cutie. I think you should give him 'Whoopsie' as a middle or nickname!

Re: Whoopsie!
I can understand why you couldn't resist! He is so cute and his past story is so sad, and his future was sooo dark. Thankfully you saved him!
