Re: What colour is he?
He does look different in different photos but I think I see a band?
It's hard to see in the photos what colour his eyes are so it's difficult to say, if his eyes are a dark red he could be a cinnamon banded if not maybe cream banded but syrian colours aren't my strong point so I could be way off!
He could just be cream maybe if he's more of a solid colour, guessing here.

Re: What colour is he?
His eyes are dark dark black I know, it is hard to tell, right? It may look like it in the pictures, but he doesn’t have a band. I have had a cream banded hamster before and he is nothing like that. Mushu is some shade of browny grey all over but it is darker on his head and shoulders, getting lighter gradually as you go down his body but never becoming white. It is odd how pictures cannot quite capture what he looks like.

Re: What colour is he?
I'm a syrian judge and I'm unsure as well. It is very hard to tell from pics especially when in each one he does look a different shade.
I'm pretty certain his eyes are a very very dark red. This matches the ear colour which are only brownish tinged. If he were black eyed his ears would be much darker. I also think he may have a pattern but this is blurred because of the very long coat. In some pics he looks satin almost.
What colour is his Belly fur? If you lift up the coloured areas of fur does the colour go right down to the roots or can you see and greyish undercoat there?
On balance I also think Red eyed cream (?satin) or cinnamon satin with possibly a band or dominant spot pattern although you do say in real life there is no white.
Colours do change as the baby coat moults out so it may be a case of waiting and seeing. Also carried recessives affect the colour in hamsters so he may have a mix of genes all exerting an influence on his showing colour.

Re: What colour is he?
That is interesting. I suppose he must just have very dark red eyes! They look black to me in all lights, so I didn’t notice. Never had a satin before. How could I tell if he had a satin coat?
He is sleeping now so I don’t want to wake him up just to examine his fur, but I will have a closer look this evening to see if the colour goes down to the roots. I think it does but I can’t be sure.
What you sya about colours changing is definitely true. I found with all my previois hamsters that their colours got darker as they aged. One was cream as a baby and ended up ginger (although I realise that term is probably not the correct one), another was greyish and ended up more brown.
His belly fur looks like this:

Utterly gorgeous! Well now, perhaps that is what I should call his particular colour.

Had a look at his undercoat and I think the hair is lighter towards the roots. Also, you may be tightabout the satin as his hair is fairly shiny and fine now I come to think of it. However, having never owned a satin before I don’t have much experience to go by.

Re: What colour is he?
If anyone is still interested in 'diagnosing' Mushu's colour and/or whether he is a satin, I think this picture captures what he looks like in real life very well.
Also, given he is 11 weeks old now, can anyone guess how long his fur will get as an adult? I have seen some pictures of very long haired hamsters and they look like their coats would require a lot of work.

Re: What colour is he?
Thought it might be easier if I posted a video. Please note: Mushu was in this box for only a few minutes (as long as it took to shoot the video).
