Default I'll be getting a Robo today~

I found him/her (they don't know the sex) on a Facebook yard sale site thing. They don't want him anymore. The cage he's in is too small, and he was living with another Robo. I don't know anything about them, but I wanted to save him. I heard that Robo's are diabetic prone, and I have a Russian, so that's fine. Is there anything else I should know? I'll attach the pictures if it will let me.

Roborovskis aren't actually prone to diabetes, that's only hybrids, campbells and chinese hamsters, but there's no harm in using a low sugar diet. Don't use the ball, which you pictured, as Robo nails can get caught in the ventilation holes. A playpen is much safer and can be made from anything. I would recommend a short cage, so they can't fall off the bars. Roborovskis are also the hardest to tame so you may end up watching them more than handling, different to the other species of hamsters.

What do you want to know specifically about Roborovskis? I can't really help more unless I know what you want to know because there are so many aspects of hamster care.

Any ham can get diabetes but as chesca said robos aren't especially prone to it like some other species but a healthy low sugar diet is always good & you could feed your robo the same as your Russian.
Robos do love to dig & burrow so give him plenty of deep substrate, in some ways they are similar to Russians, not good at climbing & prone to fall if given the opportunity so nothing too high or slippery for furry feet in his cage.
I agree with chesca about balls for robos & other dwarf species, a robo may be a bit skittish in a playpen so maybe begin with a play bin at first.

This isn't very related- but how do you make a playpen? I am genuinely curious as to how to make a secure play enviroment xx

Here you go Jellybaby.
Stylish playpen

Cross post!

There are other ways too, I made one from correx & just made a hole in each corner, fixed with a cable tie through the holes & it folds flat nicely.
You can make one out of cardboard too but not very chew proof!

Firstly good for you rescuing a little robo! I don't know how anyone could ever give one up.

The stylish playpen thread Cypher and Drago linked to is amazing! We made one and it's so easy to change the size of it, starting off small while our boys got used to it, but now they love having all the space to run around (and me not worrying about where the little speedy guys will end up!). I'd definitely agree with Cypher to go for something thicker than cardboard though...

Agreed on the ball as well. We only use a ball to get the boys out of their cage and into the pen, and they've learnt to hop back into the ball to tell us they're ready to go back to their cage after a run around

The tissue trick really helped us in bonding, but they can be very difficult to handle. Just let your new ham get used to things on its own terms and it'll all be fine! Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds on a flat palm are our best bribery trick.

You could probably use some sort of concrete mixing tub from a hardware store if it was tall enough with nothing in it that is tall or near edges as well! With robos being so small, you'd only need a container about 6-8" tall if there are things near the edge in a way a robo can climb onto them.

Or for example a cheap cat litter tray can sometimes be 4" tall(standard short sided pan)though I've seen similar things for under $10 here in the US that would also work.I'd say anything with short sides is best used as a taming tray of sorts rather than a play bin type area though, for safety precautions.

I'm not sure how tall the Rubbermaid(maybe Sterilite,I forget)washing trays(bowl holder?I honestly have no idea what the proper term is)are but I know they could probably work as well. Those are cheap too in the US,but something similar is most likely available in the UK.

Thanks everyone! He actually escaped from me the first night I had him. The cage that he came in was small and the bars were made of plastic, (but honestly, I was very unprepared for him. I really had no intentions of getting another hamster right now, but once I saw the cage he was in in the pictures I had to) so he was still in that cage, well I'm not sure if he chewed and pulled until one came lose or it was already lose (the lady had 2 and one escaped) so anyway, I put a trap out and the next morning he was in the bucket and the apple was gone. Thank goodness! Anyway. I bought another cage for the time being while the stuff I ordered is getting here. We've made very little progress in means of contact. It took me forever just to catch him out of the bucket to put him in the cage and since then he's walked around on my hand a little, so I don't see a playpen any time soon. But I'll be making another bin cage for him so he'll have a lot more space! I wish I had the other guy though I hope he's okay.
