Default Escaped hamster stories

I was just reading the topic about recapturing escaped hamsters, and I wondered if anyone had any amusing stories about what their little escapees have got up to whilst out and about?

When I was a child, we kept hamsters. My sister had one called Cuddles (heinous name I know but she was 6 then ). It got out of its Rotastak one night and we thought it was gone for good. Then the next day we saw a flash of something running across the fireplace. Cuddles had climbed into the gas fire and got into the cavity wall insultation to one side of it. Luckily it was summer and the fire wasn't in use

We tried tempting him out with food but it didn't work, so a day or two later my poor dad ended up taking the gas fire out completely so that we could reach into the insulation and pull him out Great fun all round!

Not as good a story as that one, but my hamster Jennings was forever getting out of his rotastak and he'd always go and hide under a cupboard in my room. We'd normally manage to tempt him out after a few hours, but sometimes we had to wait overnight.

When we moved out, a couple of years after Jennings had died we finally moved the cupboard and found a massive pile of chewed up carpet and bits of hammy food :P

I remmember my first hamster, good few years ago now, but he jumped off his slide into the door, and got out, and did head dives off the kitchen counter and somehow avoided the dog.

Few days later we heard him inside the sofa, in perfect health.

Madness.

There have been a couple times in the past when my hamsters escaped, but the fun thing was that I never had to look for them as they always came looking for us or at least alerted us to where they were.

I used to keep my hamster in my home office as I used to work late and he would keep me company. A couple of times I actually found him playing around in my shredder basket. The first time he escaped, I actually blamed my friend as he was over, and he must have put him in there as a joke. The funny thing is Pepper had to climb up the side of the bin and jump in. After the third time he escaped, I finally figured out how he was getting out and secured the cage. It never happened again, but every once and a while, I would put him in the bin to play around while I worked.

My last syrian hamster, Smokey, dissappeared from his cage, in my bedroom. I had left the cage door open

He dissappeared underneath the floorboards, and half an hour later the electric went off . I couldn't hear any sound from the hamster the whole night - devastated!

I was totally convinved I had a poor fried hamster - and a huge bill to pay to my landlord. A friend was due round the next day to have a look at the electric. Half an hour before they turned up I heard scratching noises from my bathroom, then the landing. I pulled up a pile of floorboards - and there was a very dusty smokey. He was absolutely fine. My friend found that the trip switch for the electric had turned itself - it was nothing but a coincidence that the electric had gone of just after the hamster dissappeared.

Years ago my Syrain Misty escaped. I found a huge hoard of hamster food on the second shelf of the fridge (which was open and off as we were defrosting it). She didn’t want any other food but felt it was the best place to store hers!
She then headed for the cooker and she set up home in a strange void between the grill and oven that I never knew existed. Luckily I head her eating and we pulled the cooker apart to get to her. She was fine and happy with lots of food!

when i was a child one of our family hamsters was out in a ball - she was a bit of a nipper and i was a bit scared of her. Anyway she got out of the ball and went behind the kick plate in the kitchen, to the back of a cupboard and then through behind some skirting which had a tiny void. We called dad at work and said to him and we then pulled the kickplates off, put thick gloves on and put food out for her. She eventually came out and mum scooped her up and put her straight back in her cage. What a fright she must have had and we did too.

The other escapee was more recent and decided to have an adventure up the road. She got out of her cage, somehow out of the house and trundled up the slight hill and was eventually found by a neighbour - unfortunately she didn't survive the trip. RIP fuzee fi. .

I had a chinese hamster who escaped once, I had no idea until i turned over whilst in bed and saw him sitting looking at me! He must have climbed out of his cage (I didn't realise what good climbers they were back then) and made it all the way through to my bedroom, catching him was a nightmare but we got him eventually and that day sorted the cage so that it didn't happen again.

It was funny looking back but scary at the time - i didn't think we'd catch him! So glad we didn't have cats then, though I reckon Molly wouldn't know what to do with a hamster these days

Well our Syrians seem to take in turns to escape:-

Jet got out of her Perfecto Tank, not her fault as we had failed to shut it properly and lost the lid lock thingy down the back of the cabinet she was on, she managed to pull the lid back and get out. She has chewed both sides of the lid where it slides on, so I guess it's only a matter of time before the lid might lift on hers.

Bailey is the worse. He's also in a Perfecto Tank, this time I hoovered up the lid lock thingy after cleaning them out and was going to get it out when the bag was full, however he managed to get the lid to slid open, even though he's a weedy thing, was out for a while and got nipped on the nose by Paddy for the effort......poor Bailey. He has now managed to chew around the sealant at the front left corner of the tank, so the whole of the front side lifts up, he was at it all night 2 weeks ago and had a lovely red nose in the morning to show for it. He now has one of our money saving jars on the top until we can find something suitable to stick it back with.

In the first few weeks of Gingey coming home with us after spending the first week in the vets with wet tail he managed to unscrew the lid on the Imac Fantasy, they are now sellotaped down.

Fluffy has also learnt how to get the lid off the top of his Imac, however he even managed it with sellotape on, so it's not doubly taped!!

Little buggers.

The Robos don't look to escape, although Paddy will come out if you leave his door open which is quite sweet.

Not escaped but my incompetence!

After having my first hamster for a few weeks I thought it might be good for him to have a runaround somewhere safe.

Hmmmm I thought not downstairs -too many leads to chew on, places to get under and general unsuitable holes with it being an old house (owned by rubbish DIYers).
Now upstairs - bedrooms not good as too may pieces of heavy furniture to get under that we wouldn't be able to move.
I know why not let him out in the bathroom -no carpet to chew, no pieces of heavy furniture, the skirting boards actually meet the floor and it's easy to clean!

Why I didn't think about the huge hole where the pipes go through the bath panel I've no idea. He didn't even humour me with a look around or even a glance at the various boxes I'd placed around for him to go in if he felt scared- no straight for the big hole and under the floorboards!

Bath panel was ripped off but no sign....

Picture me several hours later with everyone else asleep in bed. I'm crouching down in the dark with a ramp going up to his cage with a tempting treat at the top. Hope slowly ebbed away until at a few minutes before 4.30 in the morning he comes out, walks up the ramp, puts the treat in his mouth and sits there happily chewing away.

Picture me doing a silent victory dance so as not to wake up my sleeping children.
