Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
I'm reffering to anything that is not a syrian. To be more precise I'm asking about the little hamsters that are very adorable. I think I've read comments saying that their urine smells like popcorn, but I need to make sure from you guys if the urine smells very bad. I've owned a cat for a few days and the poop/pee smelled so bad I vomited. That should help you understand I'm sensitive to bad smells.

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
I think all animals have a certain type of smell to then and it is different for each species. It isn't fair to overclean them either as it removes all the scent which makes them feel secure. I'd say dwarf hamsters do have a certain smell yes. They are inclined to pee on the wheel and the more you wash it the more they do it so you cannot really stop that I'm afraid.

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
I guess some of us are more sensitive to animal smells than others, I have a very good sense of smell but don't find my dwarf hams (4 in my living room) give off a strong or an unpleasant smell, 3 of mine do pee in the wheel & occasionally it can smell a little strong but doesn't last long.
As souffle says you will have to be able to accept some level of smell though & if you find animal odours particularly unpleasant a hamster may not be for you, overcleaning to remove smells will stress them & make them pee & scent mark even more.

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
Hamsters don't smell terrible but they do have a smell.Any animal will though as mentioned, and with some species it will be affected by diet and if they're eating a high quality species appropriate diet(as is the case with cats, ferrets, dogs, etc)but not as much of a factor with hamsters which would just need to have a large enough cage with deep substrate that isn't overcleaned to keep from smelling awful It may seem a bit silly, but the more you clean the cage and the less substrate with the smaller cages the worse they will smell.
You still want to feed a high quality species appropriate diet though

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
I guess I'm the exception here that thinks hamsters can actually smell quite gross! Though you may not think it, what bedding they're on is a huge factor in how exactly they smell. I have found that paper bedding has a very gross stale-pee type smell while wood based beddings tend to smell like horse barns! Then again though, I have more animals than the average person so I may just smell all their pee combined I find that though they smell at first, you'll get used to it, and using baking soda (in the room NOT in or even near the cage) can help to capture some odors! Activated charcoal and pet safe air freshness in the room can also help too. Like others have said, lots of bedding and infrequent cleanings will help reduce the smell greatly and will help you become used to it. I do want to comment on the cat however, that strong smelling urine can be symptoms that something may be wrong so I'd keep an eye on your cat. Though cats don't always smell the most pleasant (especially their bathroom habits) they shouldn't smell so bad as to make you sick! Hope you decide that you can tolerate the smell of hamsters as they can make amazing pets and friends

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
Hamsters can be allergic to wood though, and it isn't as good for burrowing as a paper based substrate. It can also be very sharp and uncomfortable,so it really isn't a good option to use wood I've found that with good air circulation paper based substrate doesn't have much of an odor anyways!

Re: Does a tiny hamster's urine smell?
I use Carefresh in a room with 6 hammys & I clean there cages about every 5-6 weeks. There aren't any smells in here at all.
2 of them are in my bedroom, not including them cause they are in a different room but they live together for the time being, will need more frequent partial cleanings if I don't separate them.
Anyways, I think some male robos smell the worst. Sometimes Syrian urine can have a strong urine. Thankfully my Syrian & 1 dwarf use the sand bath as their potty.
So I'd say the biggest factor is the bedding you use & whether they are litter trained or not.
Hamsters groom themselves, much like a cat. So the hamster itself doesn't smell, it's just the urine.
