Default Long Haired Syrian... Boy or Girl

Hi all

I brought a new syrian home from the pet store a few days ago and they told me it was a girl. Now she appears to be a long hair but after doing some reading I've seen it mentioned that long hair males have a 'skirt' whereas the females don't. This new one definitely has a skirt and two tufts like long thin wings coming from the hind quarters on either side.

Our first Syrian short hair was clearly male (I took him to the vet because I thought he had a hernia and it cost me 30 to be told he was just well endowed LOL). Are long Haired male bits hidden beneath the hair usually or more obvious?

Have been calling the poor thing Lola but feel a name change may be in order!

Thanks for any advice

I have a long-haired Syrian male and no, their male bits are just as obvious as a short-haired one. (I owned a short-haired Syrian male very long ago when I was a kid but I will always remember how large his testicles looked) With long-haired Syrians, the fur that grows on their testicles is still gonna be short, so the bits are very much on show. He also has a skirt though, although I wouldn't call them long thin wings - it literally looks like a fur skirt that's parted in the middle for his tail.

Both male and female Syrians can have skirts, however they're much more prevalent in the males. Chances are, if you don't notice male parts, then she's likely female. Males are very easy to distinguish when holding or looking at them from the side. After she's had time to settle in, before taming begins, flip her over to be sure

Here's a link to use as a guide

I'm sorry to hear about ur hammy issue pet shops sometimes get these things wrong! I'm sure it can be resolved easy i have a male Syrian long haired and he has very obvious boy parts and same goes with my female Syrian (even through she isn't long haired)my advice would be to put her/him in a clear tub maby with a treat and have a look underneath, I am sure you will be able to tell since thats the only definite way of knowing.

hope this was somewhat helpful

ps:i am sure it will be lovely boy or girl

As the others have given the serious answers to the question that you actually asked, I'll just say that Lola seems the perfect name for a hamster of unknown sex, given the lyrics to the single by The Kinks...
