Re: I want another hamster!
A 10 gallon would be too small, possibly as Serendipity said ok as a starer cage but you would need to be able to upgrade to something larger & you would definitely need to keep them separately.

I was talking to Dr about treatment today, no chemo today. I'm not admitted to any hospital, there is a chance cancer could be gone he said, that would be a miracle

I have a spare cage in case of that. Planning to upgrade to 20 gal with larger wheels eventually as they grow. But for now they are cuddled up together in one of their houses

Re: I want another hamster!
Definitely separate them before they're old enough to start developing hormonal behavior. That is generally when the fighting starts, and seemingly social hamsters go from living together in what appears complete harmony to serious and potentially deadly fighting. It is not something to take lightly, and if you wait too long you can end up with severe consequences
Regular 20 gallon tanks are not much bigger than a 10 gallon, but 20 longs are considerably longer(though only a tiny bit wider and the same height).
It isn't a matter of just being prepared and hoping nothing happens, but understanding that it is not appropriate to keep pairs and taking action right away. The sooner they're separated, the better!

Re: I want another hamster!
Wow that is amazing news from your Doctor! So pleased. I am sure you will sort something for your little chineseys once you're home Nice that they are snuggled up together. Vectis has some good info on keeping Chinese in pairs - it does sound rare and possibly with serious issues but might be possible at first. Are they boys or girls?

They are pretty young and will need to be upgraded, I'll try this & keep an eye on them. There's a chance it might work. There is a real active one missing a tail, birth defect maybe & the more docile one has a tail.
I'll seperate them if needed, but not yet, I'll start a thread on them soon

Re: I want another hamster!
Your heart just got bigger CB. Such a caring and loving owner. You know there is plenty of info here and advice from chinesey owners and for pairs too. So I wish you all the best with them. Wonderful possible news from the doctor. Fingers crossed. There has been quite an ear bashing on high on your behalf!

So long as your landlord doesn't mind you keeping hamsters and you're happy keeping them, then go for it !
