alternatives to carefresh
hi I was wondering if there is an alternative to carefresh because my local pet store either runs out of it or the price is very high. if there isn't an alternative does anyone know where I can get it for slightly less or for better value. I use one 6 litre bag per hamster cage (I have two cages) and I clean them out fully every two weeks.

Re: alternatives to carefresh
Fitch is the best & probably the most popular substrate.
It's recycled food grade paper, soft & absorbent, virtually dust free & economical, it comes in big bags, 10kg is maybe most manageable if you're a bit short of space but if you do have space 20kg is the cheapest & lasts an age.

The link was there, fitch underlined
https://www.fitchrecycling.co.uk/fit...r/bedding.html
You can buy it from Amazon too but it's the same company just at a higher price.

Re: alternatives to carefresh
I second cypher's advice. I use fitch here with no problems at all very good substrate and bedding too. Just some torn up strips of plain white toilet paper so the hammy can have fun weaving that into the nest.
Also you could save on cost by not doing a total clean out so often. It will just stress the hammy as the clean out will remove all their scent. Try just spot cleaning the wee spot and leaving a cage clean for some weeks. Even then keep back some of the cleaner substrate to mix in with the new and thus saving their own scent. This won't upset them so much.

Re: alternatives to carefresh
Spot cleaning is perfectly fine, but as for full cleans you should really only have to do this once every two or three months in a good size cage with lots of substrate. That being said,an 80 x 50 bin(my Syrian's temporary setup) filled 3-4 inches deep for a Syrian lasts one or two months for me,but after filling even part of it with substrate 6 inches or more it lasts even longer and I probably won't have to clean more than half the cage out for another month or two.
A bigger cage would give you even more time as well as even deeper substrate, with square meter cages being able to go 6 months or more without being fully cleaned if filled 6 inches or deeper. It also saves you loads of money, which can then be used to buy useful supplies and loads of nice hamster things or even spend a bit more on yourself instead if you like!

Re: alternatives to carefresh
I haven't tried fitch, but my favourite has to be hugro hemp. I've tried carefresh, paper-based, wood pellets, wood shavings, all sorts over the years but this is my favourite by far. You can get some great deals on zooplus.co.uk.
