Default new to hamsters, help?

Hello everyone, im new to this forum and new to hamsters. I have 4 beautiful pet rats, 4 of the most gorgeous little men Ive ever known, they live the life of luxury and mean everything to me. While browsing through some rehoming boards I found a man near to where I live with hamsters who he needs to rehome. He had 10 dwarf hamsters, however, after one hamster killed another when fighting, he decided to seperate them, he only had 6 cages though, so needs to rehome 4 of his hamsters, he says he wants to rehome them singly as he doesnt want anymore hamster fights or killing eachother, I thought this was fine as I believed most hamsters needed to be housed alone anyways but I came to this forum for some extra info before I agree to taking one of these boys/girls and read that dwarf hamsters should be housed in pairs. Now Im really not sure what to do, i dont want to take just 1 if he/she is going to be lonley but I dont want to take 2 incase they fight or kill eachother. He says the hamsters are around 1 year old. Im new to hamsters so not sure what to do in this situation, any idea on what would be the best thing for me to do? Thanks very much.

Default Re: new to hamsters, help?

I would just take the one hamster. At a year old if they are fighting it will not be easy to pair them up. The majority of pairs seem to need splitting anyway. A lone dwarf is quite happy and content and becomes very people friendly. Give it plenty attention and toys. A hamster alone and not being stressed by fighting and bullying is much happier than a squabbling group.
Looking forward to meeting your newbie.
