Default Tank upgrade

Hello
Peanut my Syrian hamster lives in a 40 gallon breeder tank from Petco
I was thinking of moving her up in 2017
What tanks do u recommend that is bigger then 40 but not to tall because she needs more floor space then high space

A 40 gal tank is a big tank. You would probably have make a DYI cage. Bigger is not always better, but with a Syrian I'm sure she would like as much space as possible. Have fun, you may be tempted to get another hamster for the 40 gal. Unless you have strong will power.

I think a 50 gallon is one that some people use - not sure on dimensions though. The 40 gallon breeder is 90cm by 45cm I think, so 50 gallon would be deeper as well. According to the link below, a 50 gallon is 94cm by 48.3 cm x 50.8 cm high. Or 37" x 19" x 20". Souunds like a good size, but isn't a massive upgrade over your current tank for the cost probably. The next size up that is deep enough looks like the 75 gallon tank which is basically a four foot tank - also 19" deep and 20" high. A four foot tank is a great size. If you got one in the next dollar per gallon sale you could get it for $75

Or ow about a detolf? It might work out a bit cheaper - and keep the 40 gallon for your new hammy . The detolf works out at $60 though I think - you get a lot more length but not the depth and height.

Standard Tank Sizes

The one that looks like a great size to me is the 120 gallon one. It's just over four foot but much deeper and taller 124.5 cm long 63.5cm deep by 66cm high. Which is 49" long, 25" deep and 26" tall. The 60cm depth would make a big difference, and with the extra height you'd have space for deep substrate if you wanted. Not cheap to buy though as even with a dollar per gallon sale it would be $120. Great size tank though! I find the extra depth makes a big difference. Charlie's cage is 100cm by 54cm and the extra 4cm depth really makes a big difference over 50cm deep cages - floor toys just fit in better somehow and make the floor space more useable.

Petco only goes up to 55 gallons for the sale You'd have to get anything larger at full price unfortunately. It does make tanks less than ideal, especially when you're likely to spend just as much on a tank as you would on several large DIY cages.

A Detolf or preferably double Detolf would be a good idea, along with modified bin cages and other Ikea hacks that get extended!

You attach either two Detolf units to each other directly,or you can just make a wider version using melamine and the front and back panels with aquarium sealant and make some sort of support in the center of each panel. You can get melamine cut to size at Home Depot and it isn't expensive, and you'd only need some sides and a bottom for it.It wouldn't be difficult at all if you do it that way, only a bit of DIY work but it would take a few days to get ready since you'd need to let the sealant cure properly.

If your thinking of getting another hamster in a 40 gal tank, I wouldn't upgrade, I'd just have 2 hamsters, each in a 40 gal breeder tank. Plus have to consider how much space is going to be necessary for a bigger cage. I can't imagine bringing a 55 gal tank into my apt as they are so heavy. That's just me tho

I don't have one in person, but if you can imagine the ones off Google without the shelves and panels in between it might work for visualization purposes! You could also seal the two bottom panels together if you wanted, but unlike melamine it would be fairly heavy and it would be extremely bulky as well as quite fragile
