Default Is it safe to keep to Hamsters in the same room?

Hi everyone,

I've had my Syrian Hamster Monty for about 18 months now, and would love to have a second hamster. But the only place I could put another cage is on a shelf next to Monty's cage. Would this be OK to do so? Or would it stress Monty out too much if he could hear/smell another hamster so close to him?

Thanks

It's fine to keep them together in the same room, I have three in my living room which isn't very big!
Some breeders or people with lots of hams stack cages & it doesn't bother the hams at all.

Yep. No problem at all. I have three hamsters in my bedroom (a syrian and two roborovskis, separate cages all next to each other). Cant wait to get my room changed round so that I can get my syrian who is in the spare room in with us all.

Wow I'm surprised you get any sleep with all those hamsters in your bedroom! I'll definately consider gettkng another hamster then, maybe a couple of Dwarfs as I've never had them before. Thanks for the advice!

If you've never had dwarf hams before I would start with just one, they are fine living alone & pairs are a real challenge to keep with most ending up needing to be separated at some point.

There is also a lot more variety with things for enrichment when it comes to a single dwarf! Also, there are more things you can get for little to no money for a single dwarf and there are also plenty adorable dwarf sized things which are only safe for a single dwarf

I kept Archie & Twinkle in the same room. Archie would hear Twinkle on her wheel and he would get on his and go faster lol!

I have six hamster cages in the same room. Two Syrian hams, three hybrid hams and a Robo! I've never had any problems and I've found that if one passes away the others seem quiet for a while so I think they might actually enjoy knowing there's other animal nearby. I just make sure the cages aren't so close that they could potentially touch through the bars.

Dwarf hams are lovely too, very different from the syrian hams but so lovely in their own way. I definitely would get one to start with though as cypher said, the only dwarf hams I've kept as a pair had to be separated despite being in a massive cage and having two or four of everything. They're perfectly happy living next to one another though!

I also have 6 in one room, living room too, I think the animals know there are other animals nearby. My 2 white robos keep the exact same sleep schedule & they are up alot so they are alot of fun. I wonder if they are friends or something like that? There cages are real close to each other.
