New hamster cage size?
Ok so, quite confused, recently the minimum for tanks/cages has been changed by 1/3 of the hamsernet (hamster related internet) to about 450 sq. in. but it has mostly been 360 sq. in. should we start trusting this new minimum? I really don't know because I can only fit 3 play structures into my 20 gallon long tank. HELP SOON!

Re: New hamster cage size?
450 is in fact the minimum in the US,but I think another good standard to go by is more species dependent. In theory a robo hamster in a 20 long to a 40 gallon tank would be about equal to a 6 inch long Syrian in a 1,550 square inch cage.
The main reason I know about the whole 450 square inch change is because I was,in fact, involved in that whole disaster before certain things happened.I won't go into detail, but I can say that it was all done for a very good reason and the size difference is for the sake of hamsters even if we should still be doing even better than this minimum

Re: New hamster cage size?
Dwarf cages are very easy, fortunately You could stick with the 20 long as a temporary cage until you figure out exactly how big the hamster gets, and then choose a bin based on size.
The formula works out to be around 258.3 square inches per inch at 1,550 square inches given the 6 inch Syrian size,so using that number you'll be able to figure out something which is a good size depending on the hamster you get.

Re: New hamster cage size?
I think 450 Sq inches would be heaven to a Campbells dwarf. If you can do it, happy hamster

New cage minimum
There is a new ideal cage minimum for all sized hamsters. In sq. in., 450. Im not so sure what that might translate to in countries that use a different form of measurement, so I'll leave that up to you. This has been confirmed by me and many others that 360 sq. in (or other forms of measurement) is too small for many hamsters.
I have only been able to fit 2 or 3 play things in my future ham's tank along with the water bottle, food dish, sand bath, and space for a digging hill! And it's not high enough to make large hills of bedding for hams to dig. I think our hamsters deserve a larger space to live in.
If you use tanks, get your hands on a 40 gallon long. But that is far bigger than the minimum, so look for a cage closely around the minimum that may be cheaper, like a DIY bin cage . Thanks! I send love to you and your ham(s)!
PLEASE NOTE: This is a highly recommended size, this is not a new law

Re: New hamster cage size?
450 square inches is 30 x 15,which is actually only 3 inches wider than a 20 long.Add another 3 inches of width making it 30 x 18 instead, you'd get even more floor space at 540 square inches making it a massive difference in reality.32 x 20(roughly 80 cm x 50 cm)makes it 640 square inches. So really,it doesn't take a massive dimension change to have something bigger and better

Re: New cage minimum
640 square inches-80 cm x 50 cm/around 32 inches x 20 inches
It may not sound like a huge difference because the dimensions themselves aren't hugely different, but considering the difference in actual floor space that is one example of many that big differences don't necessarily have to be as massive as you'd think
450 square inches is 30 inches x 15 inches,so comparing that to 80 cm x 50 cm aka 640 square inches that's only 2 inches longer and 5 inches wider. That size difference gives an additional 90 square inches, however, which is a considerable difference.

Re: New hamster cage size?
Different countries and different sources within them have different size recommendations. For example, in the UK we have different welfare charities who have differing views on a recommended cage size. But here at the forum we do do not support any particular minimums as it is was is best for the Individual hamster and the circumstances of the owner.
