Default New to dwarfs

Could someone possible offer me some advice please? I have only ever kept syrian hamsters and am thinking about getting a dwarf hamster - maybe a winter white. I have 2 spare cages one is a large hamster heaven and the other is a ferplast duna fun (with the tube going in and out at the back) would the hamster heaven be too big? or would the duna be better. Also is is better to keep winter whites in pairs or should you keep them alone? my final question - I've read that some dwarf species are prone to Diabetes - does that apply to winter whites? Sorry for all the questions but I think it's better to do my homework first, so I know all the facts.

I prefer to keep them in pairs - there's always a risk (as with any social animal) they might fall out but in my experience they normally stay together. If you get a pair then I would keep them in the hamster heaven but without the tubes on the top. The duna fun isn't really suitable for a pair due to the tubes and having 2 levels which can cause a hamster to become territorial over space - but would be fine for a single hammy.

Winter Whites are not prone to diabetes, however those available in pet shops are usually hybrids of WW and Campbells so incidents of diabetes may be higher than in pure WW. A sensible diet with no extra sugars (honey treats, sugary fruit & veg) should mean you don't have problems.

If you're not in a hurry to get your hammies, you could come to the Cardiff show in September, there will be plenty of people who can tell you about their experiences with dwarfs and there will probably be some nice hams for sale.
