Default Fighting

Goose and Zero have been squabbling for a few days now, and I assumed it was minor, but today I heard them squeaking more than a normal fight, so I took one of them out for a cool off period since they weren't giving each other any space. Goose has a small spot of blood on her back, so I'm going to separate them. I'm thinking of making a bin cage, since decent sized cages where I live are near impossible to come by, and they're an arm and a leg when they're available.

Would it be okay to drill plenty of holes for ventilation, and one for the water bottle's spout instead of putting mesh over the window? I want the cage to be ready as soon as possible, since poor Goose is in a small handling tub at the moment.

Drilling holes would probably be ok as a temporary measure but I don't think that's really enough ventilation tbh you would at least need a large mesh panel on top if you don't have any on the sides.
Even if you can only buy a small cage that might be better at least in the short term.
I see you're in the UK & we have some good cages at reasonable prices available online so maybe that would be another long term option if you don't want to do that much diy.

You could make bin cages for now, like the largest Samla bins, and then save up for wire cages over time and eventually upgrade to slightly larger(100 x 50)cages.This would give you time to let both hams adjust to having something that isn't much smaller than a 100 x 50 cage,as well as giving you two great travel cages.I wouldn't just drill holes though, that makes it easier to chew out in general and won't give as much ventilation.

You could get some cheap 100 x 50 rabbit cages and mesh them over, which would be cheaper than buying similar sized cages that already have small enough bar spacing.

Another option would be doing certain Ikea hacks, but that does limit you in terms of stacking potential which means they'd technically take up more space which isn't great if you're already limited on space.

Something to remember is that if your setup in a large cage isn't appropriate, meaning lots of open space with not enough places to hide and get cover, hamsters can easily become nervous.Things like tubes and tunnels(preferably natural and chewable materials such as wood and grass),bendy bridges(technically these are tunnels),standard types of hideouts, and even levels can provide essential cover

As cypher said, I'd be a little bit concerned about ventilation in the long run with just holes - condenasation can be an issue. But I think you're quite right to want to seperate them as soon as possible before something really nasty happens. I know a lot of plastic storage tubs sell the base and lid separately so could you buy a bottom and two lids? It means you could quickly prep one with drill holes and then you'd have the other to take your time and fit with mesh? And again, I agree with cypher that a smaller cage is another good option for separating them quickly if meshing is too fiddly. And while they're absolutely fine living on their own, it would give you the chance to see how much space they Individually need. They might prefer a smaller space to feel secure while they get settled after a change. You know your hams' personalities and what they'll feel happiest with.

Thank you for your suggestions! I've put Goose in a large bin, with the lid off until i have the time to put in a mesh panel. Zero is currently in a mini Duna. I wasn't expecting I'd need to be able to fit two cages in my bedroom, so I need to find something space efficient. I've been looking into getting one of the other Duna models, the one with a bar section so there's plenty of ventilation for the cage at the bottom. It's looking like I'm going to have to stack them...
I really should have seen this coming. Goose had actually bitten me each time i let her on my hand in the last few days, when their quarrel started. As soon as I had seperated them she was back to her lovely self. That gives me one less thing to worry about!

I use mini Dumas for my less brave dwarf hams and they are absolutely fine. If you need to stack, you can mesh the sides of the bins instead of the lids. Have you seen the September photo month thread by Vectis? There were some good photos of her hamster room the other day and she has a stack of bin cages so that'd be a good reference point to start with.

I was just wondering if Goose & Zero are Campbell dwarves or robos? Male or female? Thanks!

Yes they're robo females, from the same litter. Is there anything you guys can recommend to keep Goose's stress levels down? Moving cage after a fight must be stressful... I haven't put any familiar smelling substrate in her new cage because I don't want her freaking out about Zero's scent.
