Default To move or not to move?

So we got our hemp, now we're faced with cleaning out our detolfs for the first time. The big question is weather's it's more stressful for our hamsters to move them out while we're cleaning or let them stay like I know Erin did with amylase? Our dwarf is pretty territorial and our Syrian is usually timid.

I'd put them in a carrier with some of the old substrate and plenty tissue to bury down under. They will feel secure in the small space then you can put them back in to a fully cleaned cage. Some element of stress is inevitable and all animals need to exeprience a certain level of stress as a balance to keep the hormones correct. Wild animals experience stress every day in some way as do we.
When you return them you can sprinkle some of the old bedding on top to give some of the scent back and allow them to make their home again as they want it. I think they enjoy the digging and arranging to get it back how they like it myself.
With a territorial dwarf you need to be using a tube or box to get him out and then taking them away from the cage for taming and handling so make use of this time to do that.

Good advice from Souffle. With our Syrian, I leave him in when I am spot cleaning, but put him in his pet carrier in another room when I am doing all the substrate, as he gets stressed by hearing the cage noises and seems anxious about what's going on. So he goes on our bed in his pet carrier, goes to sleep, and then goes back in the cage when it's done (with familiar smelling bedding on top as Souffle says). He usually approves. He gets more upset if something is put back not in the same place! I don't clean anything else when doing the substrate change though, and leave toys, wheel etc to be cleaned another week.

We took them out for the clean, Romeo went right to sleep, but zelda was not allowed by her fuzzy owner(Aggie) who wanted to be able to see her and therefore kept her in a travel with the lid open right next to him and the cage…

Another reason I'm stealing Romeo!! Sweep spends his entire time trying to climb out the carrier unless it's moving (like in the car or on a train) when he goes to sleep! Doing cage cleans is a nightmare trying to keep an eye on him!

There's really not much waking him up during the day. If goes back to sleep at any chance he gets. He'll have a look around if it's somewhere he's not familiar with, then find a corner

Romeo sounds just like my boy, Chibs! He's so lazy. My girl rarely sits still though.
