Default Falling off wheel?

I have just got my hammy (a 5ish month old Russian) a new wheel. His old one was seeming a bit sluggish (been well used as previous hammy used it) and it was getting so noisy!
I got him a silent spinning wheel from Pets at Home. It had the option to stand alone or fix onto the cage where his old wheel was and this is what I did - was concerned it may fall if stood alone.
He seems to LOVE the wheel! Running like absolute crazy on it but I'm concerned as he's fallen off sideways a few times and has almost flipped himself upside down a few times. He's always got straight back on. Is this normal for a new wheel? It's narrower and faster than the old one but I don't want him to hurt himself

Default Re: Falling off wheel?

My little robo used to do that with new wheels but he fairly quickly got used to handling them and slowing down enough to not flip out of control. Just make sure that in his "line of fire" so to speak he has plenty of soft substrate to land on and nothing hard that he might hurt himself on if he landed in it and he should be fine. Just keep an eye on him and I'm sure before you know it he'll be driving with due care and attention
