Hamster died suddenly - devastated!
Hi all,
Sorry for the sombre post but I'm new here and would really appreciate your advice. Six months ago we bought a 9-week old Syrian dove hamster, Flo, from a breeder and discovered tonight that she'd died suddenly in her nest.
There were no warning signs or symptoms, she was active and friendly right until the end and she lived in a lovely big, clean (Omlet) cage. I checked her regularly for wet tail symptoms and she had none plus all of her droppings looked healthy. She was on a stable diet and drank plenty of water.
I'm devastated that we only had six months with our little hammy and am shocked too as our previous hamsters both lived for well over 2 years. I know there are many potential explanations but is this a scenario anyone else has encountered? I'm so upset!
Thanks so much x

Re: Hamster died suddenly - devastated!
I'm sorry this happened, Rest in peace Flo.
Like any creature hamsters can be born with something wrong inside which does give out at a young age. It is really just one of those things and something that happens now and again regardless of how careful the breeder was.
It sounds as if she passed over quickly and did not suffer which is a blessing and I'm sure she has left precious pawprints in your heart.
I know you want a reason why but sometimes we just never get that and need to accept it. I would get in touch with the breeder just in case it has happened before in this line and they can take steps to try and minimise chances of it happening.

Re: Hamster died suddenly - devastated!
So sorry to hear of your loss - what a shock. That's very sad when she was so young. As Souffle said, she may have been born with a congenital condition. It's very sad when that happens.
Her cage will have had nothing to do with this happening. Although the Omlet cage is generally not considered good if you intend to get another hammy some time in the future and there are much better ones available. They do better with a wider lower cage and more floor area, especially when they are older.
Your little girl is playing free over the rainbow bridge now without any pain - but such a sad loss for your for one so young.

That's really sad, hope you are feeling okay. Would be very shocking to have that happen at such a young age.
