Default Robo question!

No idea where to post this so why not here
I reeeaaallllly want a pair of robos, but I was wondering what are the chances of them fighting? I know it is who has had robos live happily together for their lives and who has had to separate them due to fighting?

I've never had a pair of any dwarf hams, I find even the thought of it too stressful lol! so I can't answer your poll question but I think what you have to bear in mind is that there's never any guarantees so would you be just as happy to have two robos living separately as that may well be what you end up with!
How best to stop them falling out seems to be a bit of a controversial issue on here with many people saying have them in a really big cage with lots of toys while others (those with more experience maybe) saying a small cage with few toys stands a better chance.
I'm sure it must be lovely to have a pair living happily together so if you do choose to give it a go I hope it works out well for you & them

Chances are real high that they'll fight even with months of being together. Heard females do better & make sure they are from the same litter. Pet Co & Pet Smart combine litters so they can't say for sure if the are the same litter or not

Then you would need a proper sized tank or cage. Not sure what the minimum is for a pair? Then you would need 2 of everything including a spare cage if they start fighting at night when pet shops are closed.

For a pair it's best to have a cage of around 80x50cm - I've heard that Detolfs are great for pairs as it can be divided if they fight.

Chances of them fighting are quite high, especially if they are from a pet shop where litters are mixed. They would need to be scatter-fed, you'd need two of everything and you'd need to be on the watch pretty much 24/7 to check for fighting.

You need to ask yourself: Can I take the precautions to avoid fighting? Do I have the money for another cage? Do I have the space for another cage? Will I be able to cover the vet bills if one is seriously injured? What would you do if one killed the other? These are all very important points that must be considered.

If I could vote twice I would. The first time I rescued 3 robos, within a week one had to be put in his own bin and a few days after that the last two were separated. The second time it was just two and they made it a month before they started fighting. Unless prepared to separate I would not get a pair it is very stressful to have to keep an eye on them at all times. Every little squeak they made I would run over to check and see what was going on which was stressful for me and them. I have now had 6 robos that have lived alone and they were all quite happy. Another perk is when they live in pairs they are less likely to want to interact with you as much. Having a vet bill for a injured robo due to fighting is a very real possibility as said above.

Hi, having rescued and now bred robos I've seen quite a few. I have to say that all but two pairs fell out eventually. The first pair to live together was an older female that I introduced to a young female. The other pair was a mother and daughter.
Both pairs carried on interacting with me just fine.

Based on this, I'd say its a dominance type of relationship that works best when your robos can clearly define who is in charge I.e. One is older or one is a parent. I know someone who introduced an older male to a younger male and that pair worked. But an older/younger pair when both boys were equally bossy did not work.

I rehome singly as pets because I have had mixed pairs where the male was killed by the female so would rather not risk it. When they fatally fell out, they worryingly made no noise about it (I keep my dwarf breeding pairs close to my bed) so its not necessarily going to something you will know about.

I do sometimes retire mums with a daughter as I'm confident this dynamic works.

I would also say that pairs need less space not more. Like gerbils, they will more easily 'declan' with more territory. Each robo will potentially carve out their own space in a large cage and fight at the borderline so an 80cm cage would doom a pair to failure from the start. If you do like large set ups then I'd definitely stick to singles.

I'm really not sure, I have had 3 robos two of which lived in a pair and sadly fought, they didn't die though. Robos do live longer in a group but I don't know. The robos that fought fought over territory. One lived to 9 months the other 2 years and a month. My other robo who lived on their own as they were from an adoption centre, they lived to 1 year and 8 months however they died of a tuma (this was not because they lived alone).

It's honestly chance - some will fight and some won't! If you do still continue with getting more than 1 robo, I would reccomend getting them their own wheel, their own, food bowl and their own water bottle. I would also reccomend getting more than 1 house; incase they do have a dispute!
