Pet shop Visit
Hello all,
So yesterday I went to the pet shop (I am not going to name it, for location reasons and other) and I went to the hamsters. I saw and looked in the cages and saw lots of Syrians, which were very cute!! So I went over to the roborovski cage and saw a single robo underneath and bendy bridge, on their own. I then went to the Winter White and Campbell's cage and saw another one on there own. It melted my heart to see two on there own, but I refrained to buy them as I am happy with one hamster. They were adorable!
I then looked into all the cages and saw that in the dwarf hamsters there were only 6" wheels. Dwarf hamsters should have 8" wheels, either the pet store don't know this or is it that as the hamsters are pups they should have smaller wheels, anyway the Syrians had the 8" wheels even though they should have 12" wheels so is it because they are pups or the pet store don't know. If they don't know I will mention something but how?
Anyway that's what happened, I loved the two on their own and I am sure they will find loving homes, there were no hamsters for adoption unfortunately but the two on their own may go up soon.

Re: Pet shop Visit
Normally pet shop hamsters are only 5-6weeks old and get bought at that age so they can use smaller wheels. Not a good example to set though
At least they have near to suitably sized wheels. At my P@H the dwarfs all have 4.5" SS and Syrians have 6.5" SS

Re: Pet shop Visit
Exactly — young children go into pet shops to buy hamsters and if they see small wheels in the cages then they will buy small wheels

Re: Pet shop Visit
I know they should like put a sign saying when the hamster has reached X age then you should upgrade the wheel to 8", I think I will mention it, do you think?

Re: Pet shop Visit
I somewhat disagree. 6.5" wheels are just fine for most dwarf hamsters and 8" wheels are just fine for smaller syrian hamsters. Bigger is sometimes better though

Re: Pet shop Visit
I always with Robos and Dwarf Campbells (Only species I have had XD) put them on an 8" wheel at around 2 months as I want to be careful so they don't have spinal issues.

Re: Pet shop Visit
I use rather large wheels for my hamsters myself but you can't expect much from pet stores. The wheels probably fall over at night anyways and then the employees stand it upright in the morning. Depends on how much bedding they have that can hold the wheel in place. I wouldn't even go over to the small animal section unless I'm looking to adopt one from now on.

Re: Pet shop Visit
Fair enough, I just went to be noisy, I use a large wheel in Nutmeg's Cage. The wheel does fall over in my cage sometimes, how would I stop this?

Maybe put some large stones on the wire base or cover it with heavy toys or lots of bedding. Another option is to attach it to mesh.
