How to spot where hamster pee?
Hi, I am not sure if this is the place to ask this, but does anyone know how to pinpoint where your hamster's pee. My Mochi(winter white) has a pale yellow, close to colorless pee that is not visible, and there is no smell so far. I want to potty train him so I want some of his soiled bedding and put it into the 'toilet' I had assigned for him.

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
How long have you had him now? To begin with they sometimes pee all over the place & it's such a small amount it can be hard to find, I have found Russians take to using a litter tray very quickly if it has chinchilla sand (not dust) in it with or without putting soiled bedding on top so I would just try that & put the tray close to where he sleeps, they can often be a bit lazy & don't like to have to go far when they wake up for a pee!

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
When I first brought Willow (female Syrian) home, she peed in completely random places all over the cage. After a month or two of this, she settled down and started peeing in one spot - I then put in a litter tray and she now pees in that!

I had have him for slightly more then a week and only added hamster scentless bath sand into his tank. I do hope he will try to use it so i can clean it everyday. I only saw him pee once on my ice-cream stick platform I read on watch on youtube that potty training required soiled bedding and I have experienced my previous hamsters peeing in scented bath sand, I was considering to mix just a pinch of scented bath sand to the non-scented one so the smell will not be so strong but Mochi will still be attracted to pee there. Is this safe? I should I just leave him be and give him more time?

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
After only such a short time he may still be peeing in several places to mark his cage as his own, some do that some just pee in the house or the wheel, sometimes using the soiled bedding can help but you often don't need it as they really seem to like to pee in the sand whether that your intention or not!
Do you mean bath sand with his scent or already scented? I wouldn't use anything at all scented in a hams cage.
I would just let him get on with things for now & not interfere, it's still early days.

I see. Scented I mean those bathing sand with lemon, apple and etc smell. I will just let him settle down then. Thanks for all the advice you two.

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
I potty trained my russian dwarf just last week , I put a tub with chinchilla sand in his cage and just left it there and he started to go in it to pee, I didn't really do anything else. (i did put a couple of his droppings in but not sure if that helped!) I clear out the clump of sand after he pee's as he likes to roll in the sand too.
I'm still so proud he's potty trained!!

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
They usually choose a corner to wee in. If you see when he wakes up. Watch him and he should go for a wee just after waking. Sometimes they go all over the cage at first, then choose a corner.
Once the corner is established put a litter tray in that corner with chinchilla sand in it and a bit of substrate with wee on on top. The smell encourages them to keep using the litter tray/corner. So don't wash it unless it smells bad.
If he does a wee in the wheel you could tip it into a corner or litter tray to encourage him to wee there.

Re: How to spot where hamster pee?
CMB I haven't found Russians to be quite so corner orientated as syrians!
