Uninvited guest has made me panic!
I was in the bathroom, I then suddenly turned around and saw a large black cricket looking like bug jumping towards me that appeared to be the same size as a Roborovski hamster (no exaggeration) which resulted in me letting out an extremely loud blood curdling scream and freaking out big style. The neighbours heard me and one of them ran into my house to see if everything was okay! So embarrassing :/ The bathroom is right next to my bedroom where the bug was and I was wondering whether or not it would be worth deep cleaning all of the hamsters cages as well as everything they have including the wooden items because I don't want to be invaded by disgusting and horrifying bugs due to not knowing exactly where it had been or come from.

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
idk about the hamster situation as i too recently had a bug situation, but i feel your pain about crickets, my mom dosnt like it when we kill those tho as to her they bring good luck so maybe, although it must have been terrifying to see such a large insect maybe it was just a sign of a large amount of goodluck? lol

If that is a sign of good luck then I'm seriously done with this planet. I'll move to Mars or something! Haha I eventually mustered up the courage to tackle the beast and it was still alive floating in the base of the toilet after I tried to flush it away.

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
I don't think it will be anything to do with the hamsters or their cages It does sound rather large! It's probably something that came in from outside with the nice spring weather we've been having - all kinds of things are hatching out. We once had field rat walk through the back door when it was open at this time of year
I wouldn't deep clean your hammy cages - that will just stress them out. It's not the kind of thing that would live in a hamster cage. Hamsters eat crickets anyway If it was that big I doubt it could get inside a hamster cage lol. Probably came in through the bathroom window.

Oh my sounds like and alien come to visit. Glad you sent him/Her for a tidy bowl swim LOL.
I wonder if it was a Japanese Giant Weta? They are Huge black Crickets. Scroll down to #4 on this site for a picture of one.

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
That one looks quite tame lol! Crickets are quite nice really - but not if they come in your bathroom. It could have been a May bug maybe (they come out in May!) - they are quite big. I first saw them in Holland but I heard you get them in the Uk now as well. Big and totally harmless but they whizz really fast and it hurts if they fly into you. I felt like I'd been hit by a stone first time one flew into me. Proper name is Cockchafer.
With hammies it's the little tiny bugs that are the problem, not big ones

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
Cockchafers are nothing new here Serendipity! I never seem to see the maybug adults but I've always had loads of the huge larvae which live on plant roots in my garden, they are totally gross!
I love crickets but I think a ham might just eat one

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
I was thinking along same lines as serendipity - we used to get maybugs in our house and they were huge! Really noisy too and freaky as anything as they fly around so fast. They are really dark and look a bit like big fat crickets/beetles. I remember one got stuck in my hair once - I was terrified!

Re: Uninvited guest has made me panic!
It wasn't a May bug or any other insects mentioned. I am going to put it down as a weird looking hopping black beetle.
