Is it strange for a hamster to sleep in the 'open' ?
My hammie Arlo is sleeping out of his bed , in the open. Is it odd for hamsters to do this- I always thought they would nest to sleep ?! He looks quite comfortable, & it's quite warm here at the moment , I've not had him long though so I'm not sure if he's something he does now and then!

Sometimes they fall asleep where they are sitting It is usual for them to build a nest though. Has he got a house and lots of paper nesting material as well as the substrate? It might be the heat. I know when we had a couple of sweltering nights last summer, Charlie didn't go in his house and sat in a ceramic pot instead.

If it's getting warmer then it's most likely your hamster has built an open nest to keep temperature cool.
It's completely normal, in the past week Willow has built about 5 nests! Your ham is just finding ways to cool down

Maybe he was too warm in his bed. You could check his bed and see if he peed in it. As if he had he may not want to sleep there. It may be filled with food so he didn't have much room to sleep comfortably.
If the bed is plastic it can get condensation and the nest becomes wet

He has a house and lots of nesting material, he also has a little igloo which has no bedding in and he's just gone in there, so he must just be warm! He was in his proper nest with the bedding earlier but its quite warm in here this evening.
He looked so cute just chillin' lol

His bed is new- we got him a new cage today and he quite happily curled up in his bed earlier , but given that its new I don't think he would have tons of food stashed in there yet. He may have weed in there but I won't check now as he's fast asleep and I don't want to disturb him.

Have you got anything ceramic in the cage? A mug or plant pot on its side or a tile to sit on - sometimes they like something like that if they're a bit hot. The plastic igloos do sweat a bit. You could give her a cardboard box house instead maybe It can look like an igloo if you put a bendy bridge over the door.

Some of mine nest openly and some build big nests. It really seems to depend on the hamster/species. Sometimes the ones that normally nest deep will sleep in the open if it's warm but some will just do that all year unless it's really really cold.

Re: Is it strange for a hamster to sleep in the 'open' ?
Thanks Serendipity- he does have a proper wooden house, which is where he's been sleeping - he's next to it in the picture- the igloo just came with the cage and I popped it in- it has 3 doorways and he likes darting in and out of it , but seems to have chosen to have a snooze in it now!
I really like the idea of putting something ceramic in there for him to cook down in, I'll pop a mug in on its side.

I've just put one of those glass Gu dessert pots in (obviously empty!) its a nice solid little pot and he's a dwarf so will fit in it nicely! He poked his nose out the igloo and seemed to give me a 'look' for disturbing him.
