Female Syrian questions
I've only ever had male hamsters but am considering a female just to experience something different. What exactly is a female like in heat? I've read there can be a smell...how bad of a smell? Is there discharge? Do personalities change? TIA!

Re: Female Syrian questions
Female hamsters in general are more hyperactive than males but this can also depend upon the individual hamster. I've owned only female hamsters myself although my brother has owned a male Syrian hamster. When females are in heat they tend to be a little more hyper my current hamster, Sherbet, this means she will chew the bars of her cage and becomes a little destructive however other females I have there personalities didn't really change much however they normally they use their wheels a little more but I think that's due to natural instincts kicking in to search for a male. Personally I've got used to the smell so it doesnt really bother me as much although it's not pleasant but other people have told me that my hamster stinks but I wouldn't says its that bad! There is a slight discharge but nothing too much. Personally I prefer females to males. I think it worth considering a female and then you can decide whether you prefer males to females.

Re: Female Syrian questions
Personally I've never noticed any smells with any females I've ever had! They can be more active generally but I think this can depend on the hamster as I have had some females that were more lazy than most of the boys I've had!

Re: Female Syrian questions
The smell is not that horrid and seems to only really stink if she is or carries the Cinnamon gene. If she is not Cinnamon related then she may not have any noticeable smell at all. It has been said Females are more active, and bossy and Males more cuddly but I've had both genders do both ways. I have yet to have a male chirp too.

Re: Female Syrian questions
Be fully prepared to keep picking the rule book up. Females in heat = stuff the rules because I am going to do my own thing whether you like it or not. Oh and have fun washing yourself because you're my property now! I am not sure if anybody else's hamsters do this but mine certainly do. Haha

That is a myth. If they have got to go, they've gotta go regardless of where they are. Haha

When my female Syrian hamster needs to go and pee she won't pee on me instead she become more energetic and it looks like she looking for something and when I put her back in her cage she will pee and then wants to come out again. But other of my female hamsters would just pee on me but I think this depends upon the individual hamster.

Re: Female Syrian questions
The smell varys, you'll never know how bad it is until you smell it. All of the females I've had carried cinnamon and Belle doesn't smell hardly at all, whereas Myrcella does smell quite strong, it gets worse if you handle them during that time too. Although, it isn't disgusting and you can only really smell it when she's out of her cage. I have males and females in the same room, so that could have something to do with it too. The females get extremely energetic and Myrcella is almost impossible to handle. Winston, one of my boys, starts huffing and squeaks as well, it's really loud and then they all start huffing to each other once winston starts, Winston is the only one who squeaks though, he's extremely vocal.
I've found females to be more energetic, I've only ever had 3 female syrians though, so maybe someone with more experience of females can help you a bit more
