Default Marshmallow moved out

Honestly! Since we got him I have been very careful not to disturb his setup when spot cleaning. Some time ago I fitted the penthouse and since then he's used it as a lookout to get a better view of his staff.

For a while now he's been making a mound out of the hemp substrate in the main cage, so much so that his nest had reached the bottom of the plastic shelf. Then he had a landslide and his bed ended up at ground level in the middle of his cage.

So on Saturday I very gently moved it back, making sure I did not disturb the actual nest...

Bad hamster - clearly that was not ok to do because he packed his bags and moved his nest into the penthouse!

When my son got his first hamster last fall, i didn't know not to disturb the nest. And I had read that the cage needed cleaning weekly. Poor Peanut moved nests several times before I learned that valuable lesson. Who knew hamsters were so particular .

We got him just before Christmas and he was 7 weeks or so old then. He's well settled and very tame, and still extremely hyper. Anyway he has now spent ages moving his entire larder up to the penthouse so I guess that's it.

Mind you if I find that he wees up there he may well find his cage missing a penthouse!

Twinkle moved several times when I got her. I did put a lot of things in that could be used as a sleeping area. Funny thing is she tried about 5 areas and ended up going back to the first.
Fingers crossed marshmallow will take to his penthouse and doesn't use it as a toilet.

I'm mean! I give Charlie a very big house and no other options to nest in! And tempt him into it by putting a tunnel over the front. Then he nests where I want (famous last words).

I think nesting in the penthouse could end up being a stinky mess. Sometimes they block up the tubes as well (as they usually block up the entrance to any house), but I think some people manage with a hammies nest in the Penthouse.

I think it might be better to take it off really. Paper nesting material doesn't collapse as easily as hemp substrate (sorry if I misunderstood that).

Maybe if you remove the penthouse and block the tubes off, and then put a big pile of torn up white toilet paper somewhere in the cage, he will just make a new nest that won't have a landslide lol. Or you could take one of the shelves out of the hamster heaven and put a large flat roofed house in and that would make a shelf and a nesting box.

We've been ok with the penthouse so far. ex-Biscuit had it and made his nest there. He did eventually start to wee but an arrangement of bits of cardboard roll disuaded that. I'll see how it goes with Marshmallow.

Oh the bed is toilet paper, I've always used that - Marshmallow had taken to making a mound of hemp substrate a third of the floor area with his paper nest on top. It worked ok for him until the landslide - I did wonder if he was in the nest when it went! I can just imagine it sliding down and depositing the hamster on the floor.

Lol I can just imagine him sliding down. Not funny really, it must have upset him - very sensible of him building his nest somewhere more solid. If you've used the Penthouse before and have strategies it'll probably be fine then.
