A New Hammy...
Hi Everyone!
As some of you may know, I have been waiting to get a hamster from my local breeder. However, I am now able to get two hammies at once, so I'd like to introduce my new hammy to you!
(Hmm. Right now, I can't seem to get the pictures from my email onto here. I'll have to see if I can do it somehow.)
I got him only a few hours ago at my local Petsmart, and I am really excited to introduce him! So far, I have not decided on a name for him; but I have a bunch of options that I'm thinking of.
He is a long haired Syrian male with beautiful Dove eyes. I'm not exactly sure of the technical name for his coloring, but he seems to be turning more of a light brown color instead of a white.
Right now, I am leaving him to settle in his cage and get used to his surroundings! The only concern that I have about him is that he started to "growl" slightly when I was about to put him in his bin cage. There was no biting involved, and he seemed perfectly fine to walk over my hand afterwards. However, should there be anything that I do or need to be concerned about? He seems to be quite friendly (although a LOT shyer than Calypso was when I first got her) and has not nibbled or bit me; it just is a bit of a different scenario than Calypso. I know he didn't have much socialization when he was in the petstore, so that may be the cause of his "growling".
Anyways, I am so happy to introduce this little guy to you, and I hope that we'll have many happy memories together. If you guys have any tips or name suggestions, I would really appreciate them!

Re: A New Hammy...
I rescued a Syrian once who growled when I first brought him home & he growled at the vet too. He's just scared or mad that he got disturbed even though he's being adopted, mine was very friendly after giving him a week or so to settle in.
I just left him completely alone except to feed him & change the water. Congratulations on your new hamster btw! Perfectly normal to growl, at least in my experience, he wasn't aggressive or a biter at all. A little sweetheart!

Thanks Cinnamon Bear! That makes me feel a lot better! He does seem like a real sweetie, so I shouldn't have any problems.
I'm also going to try the "tissue paper" technique where you stuff it in your clothes to get the "scent" of you onto it.

Re: A New Hammy...
Congrats on your new ham!
They are all different so just let him take his time settling in, growling or squeaking isn't unusual if they're a bit nervous, he has lots of new things to adjust to so just go with the tissue & talk to him for now & I'm sure he'll soon make himself at home.

Re: A New Hammy...
He looks lovely (if he is the hamster in your avatar). Congratulations. How lovely to have him and to have a breeder hamster to look forward to as well!

Re: A New Hammy...
Thanks everyone! The little guy is going to be checked out at the vet today for any health issues (etc.) and any signs of zoonosis symptoms!
I have decided on a name, but I think I will wait to reveal it until I create his own thread with pictures...

Re: A New Hammy...
Don't be surprised if he growls at the vet, mine did 2 weeks after I bought him on his free vet exam.

Yeah! I hope he won't, but we'll see xD.
As of right now, he seems really settled in which is awesome! He also started using his potty right off from the start (my fingers are crossed that it'll stay that way.)
