Don't get a boy and a girl if you want them to be cage mates, or else you'll have lots of babies!
From what I gathered they can be kept in same sex pairs, BUT there is always the possibility of them falling out, so you're going to have to be prepared to have them in two separate habitats if that happens.

Agreed! Don't get a male and female or you will end up with babies. Then if you don't separate the parents before the birth she'll just have another litter right away. Back-to-back litters are really hard on the female and she and her pups will suffer. Plus you'll end up with possibly dozens of pups that will need housing and if any mistakes are made sexing you'll start to have inbreeding if the original pair weren't already siblings. It will be a nightmare, and more so for the hamsters.

I have two little boys who got along at first but had a falling out so like the others said. if you get two be prepared to have a place for both of them separate if they fall out.

Re: 1,2,boy,girl??
You didn't say which species of dwarf but I guess you mean russian or robo as they are the only hams that can be kept in same sex sibling pairs, you definitely don't want to keep male & female together & pet shops can get the two confused so if you did get a pair do be careful to check they are same sex!
If you're new to dwarf hams I would really suggest beginning with just one, they live happily alone & it gives you more chance to interact with your new pet without the worry of monitoring the behaviour of an animal you're unfamiliar with for signs of trouble.
Keeping pairs isn't easy, requires a very specific kind of set up for the best chance of success but even then more often than not the hams fall out as they begin to mature & need to be kept separately.

Re: 1,2,boy,girl??
I have two roborovski girls. They fell out and now live separately.
I agree with cypher that it is probably best to start with just one. You can give him or her lots of love and attention and not have to worry about fighting.
Hope to see pics once he or she arrives.

just get one, I think. They usually end up needing separating anyway in my experience! There isn't really a "best" breed, but if you've never had one I'd suggest a winter white or hybrid.

The best breed is the one you fall in love with.
