Me again!!!! We are going tea time today to see some Baby syrians, its not a breeder as such, but as its near home, will look there first.

Will post later.... I'm as excited as my Son ( in fact I think I'm more excited) I will have to watch I don't take over...ekkk and if he picks one & I love another one, (as long as it looks in good health) I will stay quite, gulp! Perhaps he will ask my advice tee

because me and me partner couldn't agree we ended up with 2 Syrians to begin with, and the curse of disagreeing still lingers, we ended up with a few extra Campbells, due to his pleading over wanting a Mottled Dove. oh and his love of Mrs Whitlow. Now he wants a Normal Pearl, and I want a Mandarin Pearl, so at least they will have company!!

I am sure though that whatever is picked you will love it. Maybe you would like a different colour, but when you have it home that will cease to matter as much

or else bribe with sweets!

To be honest I would get a shorthaired female over a longhaired male as a first hamster

Whatever sex he chooses stear him towards the shorthaired options if there are any.

I would say a male too for temprement (though I find the temperment difference between males and females is more apparent in the dwarf types), but I know a few kids can react funny to the size of the pompoms, and the fact they will touch your hand (could be I have been around screamish children)

short haired though will be the easiest, and the best idea to get used to having a hamster

Yeah, longhaired males can get very long hair and require extra special attention for it - you don't need that bother with a first pet hamster.

Have fun with the babies!

I would choose a male for a first hamster too. We have always found the males to live slightly longer and calmer but maybe that's just us. Would go short haired. Male long haired hamsters can get tatty and tangled if not groomed properly and the long skirt can get easily tangled in bedding etc. A long haired female will not usually have the skirt so would be better if all are long haired. Hope you are lucky. Best go for a small breeder than a pet shop for sure.
