Re: New hamster won't come out at all.. worried
Chocky's definitely settling in and being more confident. What a little star!

Re: New hamster won't come out at all.. worried
Yes there is definitely an improvement with Chocky, thanks all! He did bite my daughter again really bad but it was her fault - on (really useful) dad's advice she decided to feed him (Chocky not dad!) a cranefly. Which involved her trying to stuff a live cranefly into his house while he was sleeping. A big hole in the nail and damaged pride as a result. No hard feelings from either side. After a lot of cursing. From both sides.
Here are some photos to illustrate the tame side of Chocky. Some of Chocky and some of Fluffums (full name The Incredible Fluff - school hamster we are looking after AGAIN this weekend). A bit hard to take better photos with our camera as both hammies are too quick and will not pose long enough. Need more training I guess. To be able to stand still in a pink tutu for half an hour...

Lovely photos of both, Chocky looks so cute & cheeky, certainly not looking shy any more!
Hopefully lessons have been learned & there won't be any more bites!

Re: New hamster won't come out at all.. worried
Chocky has not been allowed to roam yet in the living room (Fluffums has). Will hamster proof it again in near future and see how he likes it. Fortunately we are in a new build which was pressure sealed (i.e. there are no holes as far as I can see) so proofing is relatively straightforward. Blocking behind bookcases is the main issue as our rats decided to settle behind the bookcase plinth on the first day we got them and it took lots of frozen (defrosted of course) peas to lure them out

So cute! That little innocent face lol! He looks like Ruby's Spike.
Naughty Chocky biting but, I'm not surprised, he was probably having a nice nap and then a live cranefly being pushed into his bed and spoiling his beauty sleep lol.

Re: New hamster won't come out at all.. worried
Now the cheeky thing cannot get enough of running around! The moment he sees the ball he jumps in. The playbox is never sufficient, attempts to escape become more and more elaborate. Let him roam in a part of the living room yesterday, he had a great time (and of course found a weak spot in the defense system and tried to escape and would not take no for an answer). Don't know where the timid hamster has gone, has definitely been replaced at some point! He used to sit nice and quiet in my hand when I picked him up, obviously very weary. Now he seems to find it a minor obstacle on his way to freedom and tries to launch himself out at any opportunity... Need to hamster proof all of the living room urgently, life will be sooo much easier

Well, this little one seems to be doing very nicely. He's a very handsome hammy too. That little face is just so cute. Hammy's need privacy and don't handle being woken up too well, as he's been trying to tell your daughter. Hammy bites hurrrrt! Keep in mind that hammies don't forget weak spots, so make sure to shore up any areas he's been trying to escape through.

Re: New hamster won't come out at all.. worried
Hi all,
Chocky is doing fine. We hamster proofed the living room, and he is also allowed to go into the hall and up the stairs onto the landing. Gets extremely indignant if I shut the door to the hall and tries to chew a hole in the door. Also has a master plan to get into my huband's office. I think we will soon have a hole in the carpet there.
Very quick on the stairs too, so I have to run and shut the doors before the fluffy sprinter gets on the landing.
He lets us handle him and will walk onto a hand to get out of the cage and will run over me if I happen to be in the way. But he does seem to find handling more of a bit of irritation rather than fun. He also tends to launch himself out of my hands often so he has fallen down several times when I was not quick enough to catch him. Is that normal behaviour? I am very careful but he is extremely quick
He also cannot be easily bribed. Maybe we spoil him but when he is out and about he is not normally interested in any treats we give him so I cannot really make sure my hands are associated with good things other than taking him fun place...
