Can you tell me what sort of hamster this is?
I saw some hamsters in the pet shop labeled as syrians....they were blatantly not (Good 'ol P@H!!)
I thought they were so cute that I thought about getting some.
Although I have a Syrian hamster already I figured these little guys might need different care?
So I scoured Wikipedia, but they don't exactly match any of the pictures on Wiki-p.
I think they might be Russian Dwarf Hamster or Robos.
I'm sure you guys know.
I posted the pictures already on my blog here ->> http://obtuseruby.blogspot.com/2009/...f-hamster.html
Thank you xx

Re: Can you tell me what sort of hamster this is?
They are closest in type to Winter White Russian Dwarf hamsters. The greyish one is a Sapphire and the browny one a Normal in colour. If you saw these in P@H they are more than likely hybrids of the two species Campbells and Winter white as they do not stock pure animals by and large in Russian Dwarfs. P&H label all this type of hamster as Russian Dwarf Hamsters.
Robos are much smaller and have white sort of moustaches!

I agree with souffle on this. They look more like Winter Whites than anything else, but are probably hybrids. Still, they are cute little thangs aren't they?

Re: Can you tell me what sort of hamster this is?
You do sometimes see "bat ears" on WWs, however as there aren't many people breeding pure WW and they seem to be quite in demand at the moment so can't imagine too many are selling off stock via pet shops it would be unlikely that they are. But it doesn't really matter, they'll still be just as lovely pure or not, it just means that you should never consider breeding them.

Re: Can you tell me what sort of hamster this is?
i wouldn't even consider buying them to be honest as i wouldn't want to support their breeding of hybrids.... although for that matter i wouldn't buy any hamster from pets at home apart from in the rescue section.

Re: Can you tell me what sort of hamster this is?
Thank you everyone for your replies
I think they are probably a bad buy.
It is so hard not to buy from P@H, I feel like I can rescue them, but I realise they will just breed more.
They are soooo cute though!! If I get any, I'll get them from a breeder.
xx
