Introducing Jet....
Well here is our 6th addition to our hamster clan, this one however is a Syrian called Jet, chosen by my boyfriend as HE wanted a Syrian. She's nearly 7 weeks old and comes from a small pet shop housed in a garden centre. They are really good there and I know they obtain their livestock from reputable breeders as my Dad used to supply rabbits to them. We can tell she's from someone who spends time with them from an early age because of how tame she is.
She is currently living in a single Imac Fantasy but that's going to be 2 storey one very soon and because she's taken to sleeping in the tubes, storing food and eating in the tubes we are replacing them with the helter skelters that our Robos have until she finds a nest/house that she's comfortable with and then we may put then tubes back in.
She's also taken to bar chewing but we might have stopped that........after reading on here that using antibacterial hand gel on their hands before handling may prevent your hamster from biting we decided to rub some on her bars (we have some as boyfriend works at our local hospital) and she's not touched them since, obviously it will probably wear off so we may have to do it again but for now it's working and she's playing/using the toys that we've provided.
She's already showing her personality and will come out on her own accord if we leave the door open and will also come to us for a treat. She can still be a bit nervy when we pick her up but after a while she settles down.
Well that's number 6 but somehow I can't help thinking we'll end up with another Syrian or a pair of Robos as we have a spare cage after moving Rolo into an Imac from a Duna Deluxe, so watch this space.

Re: Introducing Jet....
She is a very pretty hamster.
BTW Two of mine filled their fantasy tubes for a couple of days. I just emptied it out and they stopped doing it. I only put sawdust in the bottom now, all three only wee in the sandboxes on the top level now. It might be worth trying her for longer with the tubes to see if the novelty wears off.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments, Jet seems to be settling in quite nicely.

Haziebabie - Thanks for the advice..........her tubes were stuffed with bedding and food everyday last week, so we emptied them each time but she kept doing it, so yesterday when we cleaned her cage we put in a helter skelter. However, we have ordered an extension kit for her cage, so will leave the tubes in that part and see how she goes with that. Fortunately she doesn't seem to be using the tubes as a loo which is good and using the loo thingy we've supplied.

Re: Introducing Jet....
Jet is lovely! I love her little eye rings. How nice to hear you got her so tame from a good pet shop. I know how it is when you have an extra cage lying around *sigh* They fill up quickly (somehow) Congrats on your new baby, and I'm sure you'll take great care of her!
