HI!
I have only just registered on here, but I wanted to tell you why I am glad I came across this site!
Two weeks ago my syrian hamster Quest sadly died
I absaloutley loved him to bits and he brought me so much fun and giggles! He was old when he dies (around 2year and 3months). Around November I heard him making fummy squeaking noise in his cage and put this down to odd hamster behaviour. Just after christmas I notcied he had developed two red bald patches around his scent glands. They looked sore as though he had been biting himself, this didnt get any better so a few days later I took him to tthe vets who said it was probably due to mites. He had mite drops put on him and given a course f antibiotics. I gave him this religiously, but still saw no improvement. By this time he had lost more fur and was starting to itch and bite himself around his tail and bottom It was horrible to watch, so we went back to the vet. I saw a more experienced vet who said it wasn't mites, and didn't know why he had lost so much fur and was irritating himself so much. This time I was given antibiotics and cream. The cream relieved the itching and the dry skin a bit.
He kept loosing fur and weight, and started to look really small and bald. It was so upseting seeing him go from beng such an active healthy looking hamster to this.I decided the best thing I could do was try to make life as comfortable as possible. I was giving him loads of water, but still had no idea what was wrong with him, i spent ages putting all his symtoms into google, and reading various things, but to no look. Eventually I got home one evening to find he had died
I was reading through posts on here earlier and the word 'cushings' caught my eye (beacause I know of this in horses) It described exacly how Quest was, and when I read the article I could not believe I had finally found the answer! This of course didn't help my poor little hamster, but I feel so much better knowing I found out what was wrong with him and knowing I did all I could. I do wish I had found this site earlier, I don't know what decision I wold have made but at least I would have had all the information I could.
So THANKYOU for being so informative and thorough, I will definately be coming here for all hamster related advice from now on! Sorry for such a long post, but wanted to share it, as this has been such a revelation to me!
